1st Free Kronos Saxophone Pack

Post by MRedZac »

Hello Guys,

in the lack of good saxophone sounds, especially for Alt- and Tenorsaxes, I spent a couple of days on sampling sax sounds, which I would like to share with you.

All of them are sampled in 48.000 Hz at 24bit, tone by tone. 3 Alto and 3 Tenor Sax. 8 Velocity Layers each, one of the Altos even at 5 different expression steps, Every single sample is 9 seconds long, no looping. Total size of all the samples is about 7.5 GB.

I created a couple of programs from it, fitting to my needs, included in the PCG File. See here:

For sure, these are not perfect, yet, but for all of you surely a good starting point for your own creativity to modify them up to your personal needs.

Installation is rather easy, you just download and unzip all the 61 files from the link given below and copy all the unpacked files to your Kronos Harddrive. The programs are in the file "Kronos Sax Pack.PCG" which you have to load first. After you have to make sure, you load all of the UserBank.KSC files at the same time. This takes around 400 MB of your Kronos Ram. Also make sure, that EXi3 (Brass and Woodwinds), which was delivered with your Kronos, is properly loaded as well, since I used sometimes also some Multisamples from it, only for some of the Growl Sax.

So, here is the link, total download size is 6.5 GB:

Enjoy ! And maybe, once you made some better programms from the samples, you can post your PCGs here in this thread, so that the libary becomes even more useful to everybody ! :D

Cheers
Garfield

Really, really thanks for this set. I'll test on the weekend.

I'm curious about the process, especially how to use a 24-bit samples .... I confess that I tried to use it a few times (including the large RSF Piano created a long time ago, but I can't.....had to convert the samples to 16 bits).

Congratulations for your job e for share it.

Me too. I'm assuming the sampling was done in 24 bit but the files were downsampled to 16 bit after processing, to play in the Kronos.

Well, I don´t know, what Kronos does with the samples, but I recorded everything in 24 bit, exported to and imported as SF2 to Kronos for further work. A conversion to 16 bit can only occur then importing to Kronos, but I did not downsample anything by myself actively.

I think Kronos probably automatically downsamples to 16 bit in that case, perhaps Dan can shed some light on this.

oh .... my happiness was gone rsrsrsrs I thought you had discovered the solution for 24-bit samples at Kronos

I've done a lot tests, and when you export to SF2, the reduction is made...

Thank you. :D

sounf font 2, until 2.4 specifications,
its only compatible with 16 bit samples,
so I think downsampling to 16 bit was
done during sf2 conversion

Even if not, the 2.4 standard was created to be backwards compatible with older hardware so that hardware supporting only 16 bit soundfonts simply plays it at 16 bit.

I really don´t want to be unpolite, but I think, a discussion about 16 or 24bit sample playback possibilities in Kronos and what SF2 export does or doesn´t to samples, shouldn´t be part of this thread. These samples are provided "as is" and I really doubt, that anyone in audience will hear a difference between 16 and 24 bit, once you´ll play it live on stage... Due to memory limitations, I even appreciate smaller file sizes anyway... For use in studio productions, there´s other (better) possibilities usually, than playing saxophone from Kronos...

The discussion is valid because there is some question about the format actually used/played by the Kronos. But you're right, I didn't even mention that it's awesome how these are offered to the community like this, considering all the amount of work in them! Thanks very much, MRedZac, I think that's a wonderful gift to the community. I didn't mean to shift the focus away from that so much.

You´re welcome, my dear friend. Always getting answers from the comunity, it feels right, to give something back to it sometimes.

Even me, I find these questions about Bitrates on Kronos very interesting, but to me, this feels important enough, to discuss these in a seperate thread !

when I started to explore the manual programming of HD-1 patches
I've loaded 24 bit samples directly in sampling mode
everything seems to be ok )
