I feel so great that I didn't install an SSD myself but had the official Korg dealer install an Intel 510...

Why not do it yourself? it is not rocket science ;)

By the way Intel uses the Sandforce Controller ....

Maybe I should've included a /sarcasm tag. I'm used to building my own systems so I could've easily done it myself. I just wanted it done via the official route to not have warranty issues. And now they put in a known to be unreliable disk.

;) ahh cool no probs..sorry I did not get the sarc!

It is more a matter of they CAN go snafu rather than they will...in the majority of cases (much like the key bed issues on the K's) they will be fine.

But with Sandforce controllers it is known a percentage just fail totally. IN some cases there is no warning. Turn it on one day and it is gone!!

I daresay the factory ssd on the K also uses Sandforce controllers (they are the cheapest controller - and I cannot see Korg putting in a premium SSD ;) ) and there have been no reports - that I have seen or heard of - of K's losing the ssd...so it is nothing to worry about per se, but something to be aware of.

Personally I am going for the Samsung 840 series 120gb. Samsung is one of the few SSD makers that use their own proprietary controller.

But having said that, the Intel drives (even with Sandforce) have a very good rep!!

Snader, you had me wondering too because I kinda know you're one of the technically minded people here. Missed the sarc myself too. Oopsie!
But I'm still wondering what SSD I should go with and after having checked out some info on line I'm still not sure although I'm heading in a 240 gig size at this point in time.

I guess if you read the linked article it made more sense, as it was basically a rant against the Intel 5xx series.

Keen to know if the samsung 840 is a goer in the kronos

I'm contemplating putting a samsung in too - they are available here so if the sata 3 thing is ok - then I think thats what I will do too. The SATA 2 discs seem a little harder to find.

These are a fantastic board eh. - neighbors jsut asked me to turn it down, I'm barely warmed up.
Just play it

Sorry for the thread resurrection but I have been meaning to put another drive in my original K88 for years now, but never got around to it.
I just was given an Intel 510 so I'm curious what your experience have been. Did you keep it in?
Is it notoriously unreliable so I'm better off ditching it and buy another one, or does it work ok? It'll be a secondary drive with little use (and purely recreational)

Thanks,
C

I have an Intel 320 SSD 120GB in my K61. Been in there for three years now without any problems.

It's still in there and still working. The writing load on it is almost non-existant though, I have a few libraries on there that get loaded at boot (mostly) but I do all my PCG and sample writing to the factory disk or a USB stick. My laptop has been running an Intel 320 series 120GB for four years though and it's still good.

How is the SSD formatted in the Kronos to be compatible with the OS?

Thanks for the info all!
I plugged it in this weekend and formatted it using the Disk\Utility on the Kronos. It was NTFS formatted before, and showed up as 'Unformatted'.
Works like charm - I don't foresee any large amount of writing to it either so I should be good.

Thanks!
