I wanted to play the piano sound full range on the keyboard and I didn't know if you use SmartScan to do this or do you just extend the range of the piano pad down to C2? Thanks...
SmartScan is a "scanning mode". There are two things involved with playing something full range, when you are talking about controlling KARMA at the same time. One is the timbre key zone, which you mention. Of course, if you map a sound across the entire timbre key zone, then yes, it is across the full range of the keyboard. But what we are talking about here is the input zone to KARMA, and how it is controlled.
This relates to the way Korg arranger keyboards work, as well. Normally, when you have a split set up, such that chords in the LH area control/trigger the accompaniment or KARMA, a single note will trigger a new chord (a major chord), you can get a minor chord with just two notes (the root and the minor third) and so on.
SmartScan is a scanning mode that is specifically designed to be used across the full range of the keyboard, and corresponds to what is called Full Scan mode in the arranger keyboards. It is designed to be used with something like a piano sound that is mapped across the full range of the keyboard, such that you do not have to think (so much) about whether you are triggering chords in a specific area of the keyboard when controlling KARMA or the accompaniment. It has the following features:
There are sliding "windows" that track the LH and RH. It requires 3 notes or more in either of the sliding window areas to trigger a new chord. This means you can trigger a chord, and then play single and double notes on the keyboard (i.e. solo) without affecting the underlying chord, even though the whole keyboard is selected as input into KARMA. There's a 3 note threshold in either hand. Secondly, when the sustain pedal is down, all chord changes are blocked, so you can do whatever the heck you want without changing the chord.
