So however much your Oasys cost you is irrelevant.

Hi Eric,
Will Cat-2 have a few more dance/trance combi's

I like the following in Cat-1:
UK Electro
Rave Wake
Dutch Treat
Cathedral of Dance

Cant stop jamming on these - there are a couple more in there i cant remember the names.

I dont think people comprehend the dance component of the O...most youtube and other media examples are of rock genre...why is it all Jorden Rudess/Emerson prog rock??? 8)

Billy
Yamaha C1 Grand Piano.
Korg Oasys 88, Jupiter 80
Kronos 88, V Synth GT
I am a student of classical piano...I am not a classical pianist.

Hi Billy,
Yes, indeed, Cat2 will have this genre well represented. It will also have other genres/styles such as World, Symphonic/Ochestral, Jazz, House etc. as well. We try to provide something for everyone.

I haven't had much time to dig into Cat1 (too much work!), but one Combi that really leapt out at me on the first run through is the one called Warm Analog (IIRC) and my favourite combi since Locale 5 in the factory set. Anyway forgive my brevity, will write more when I play more with them :-)

Thanks Daz. Yes, 031 Warm Analog (technically the last combi in the set excluding the freebie revoiced Dark Side), has a nice warm analog pad for the left hand and a warm mono synth lead for the right hand, hence the name. Plus there are other neat goodies in that one.
Once you get off work, go jam and have some fun.

In the PDF guide, the description for the "cool suitcase" states that the Karma uses SmartScan so the keyboard can be played full range...What is this?? does this apply to the piano sound of the cool suitcase? I wanted to play the piano sound full range on the keyboard and I didn't know if you use SmartScan to do this or do you just extend the range of the piano pad down to C2? Thanks...

SmartScan is a "scanning mode". There are two things involved with playing something full range, when you are talking about controlling KARMA at the same time. One is the timbre key zone, which you mention. Of course, if you map a sound across the entire timbre key zone, then yes, it is across the full range of the keyboard. But what we are talking about here is the input zone to KARMA, and how it is controlled.

This relates to the way Korg arranger keyboards work, as well. Normally, when you have a split set up, such that chords in the LH area control/trigger the accompaniment or KARMA, a single note will trigger a new chord (a major chord), you can get a minor chord with just two notes (the root and the minor third) and so on.

SmartScan is a scanning mode that is specifically designed to be used across the full range of the keyboard, and corresponds to what is called Full Scan mode in the arranger keyboards. It is designed to be used with something like a piano sound that is mapped across the full range of the keyboard, such that you do not have to think (so much) about whether you are triggering chords in a specific area of the keyboard when controlling KARMA or the accompaniment. It has the following features:

There are sliding "windows" that track the LH and RH. It requires 3 notes or more in either of the sliding window areas to trigger a new chord. This means you can trigger a chord, and then play single and double notes on the keyboard (i.e. solo) without affecting the underlying chord, even though the whole keyboard is selected as input into KARMA. There's a 3 note threshold in either hand. Secondly, when the sustain pedal is down, all chord changes are blocked, so you can do whatever the heck you want without changing the chord.
