SQ-1 and chords?

Post by pofor »

Hi!

I want to recreate the synth in the beginning of "My Love" by Justin Timberlake.

I want to press a chord on whatever synth I'm using and I want the rythmic effect to be created by a step sequencer. Can the SQ-1 do that or do I need something else?

Sorry if it's obvious but I'm kinda new to the synth world!

Thanks for the help!

The effect you are after is created by an arpeggiator, one that can create rhythmic effects, not just split up chords. Off hand I know that the exact rhythm in that intro is a standard arpeggio on the Roland Gaia synth, and probably many others. A step sequencer isn't really what you are after to do this as they tend to also decide the note as well as the rhythm, although the step sequencer on the Microbrute allows you to transpose in real time. I think the sq-1 will only trigger monophonically, but you could program it to play the rhythm, probably.

I thought the whole point of arpeggiators was to break up chords in different ways, but maybe there are those that let you play a chord and just give you the arpeggio rythm. Do you know of any? Or any way I could achieve this through hardware?

Thanks!

In my home set up I can achieve the exact same effect by using the Gate Arpeggiator on the electribe 2 (a gate arpeggiator is what you need as it doesn't split the chords, but rapidly repeats the notes you play in a pre defined rhythm) on setting 14, or the arpeggiator on the Roland Gaia using arpeggio preset D1. I would imagine there are loads of synths out there that let you do this.
