Kronos + Kontakt4 (PC) = 20ms
I´ve searched the forum but couldn't find an answer, just related subjects.
For the first time I tried to use a VSTi with Kronos as a soundcard.
This is fantastic!!! No need of an interface, mixers and extra cables!!!!
But there is one problem. With Kontakt 4, for exemple, I am getting around 20ms of latency. With a Fast Track Pro 2, I get around 8ms.
My laptop configuration is:
Processor: Intel i5 M460 2.53GHz
RAM: 4GB
OS: Window 7
So what latency are you getting?
Is there any way to reduce it?
Thanks

on a Windows machine, there is no ASIO driver, so it relies on WDM drivers. They are not low latency. Some have had mixed results using ASIO4All, but there is no comprehensive solution to do what you want on a Windows PC.

Jeebustrain, what do you mean there is no ASIO in Windows?
As for ASIO4ALL, it is probably the best driver and better then many of
the ASIO drivers for PC that actually come with some of the SoundCards.
Santos, in Kontakt 4 in Audio Settings you have to sellect the same Driver
you are using in Fastrack to have the same latency.
I usually work with between 3-4 ms Latency...but i've never used Kronos
as a Soundcard though nor i know how, i will probably never use it.

What I meant was that Korg does not offer a dedicated low-latency ASIO driver on the Windows platform. ASIO4all offers low latency, but it does it at the expense of higher cpu utlization than a real driver. The couple times I tried it, I had problems with lots of audio static and lockups in my DAW when trying to use it as a VST host (tried it in Ableton Live, Sonar, and Reaper)BasariStudios wrote:Jeebustrain, what do you mean there is no ASIO in Windows?

What i wonder is (and i didn't know there wasn't any) why Korg wouldn't give and Asio driver?

To my knowledge, korg has never actually given a good answer. There were a bunch of threads last year about it and Dan weighed in a few times, but only to clarify that the Kronos is class compliant, meaning that it doesn't require any special audio drivers... Unfortunately though, on a windows machine, that means using WDM.

Hi bsbsantos !
I remember using asio4all driver to see how it can handle the latency and it was pretty good ! I think it is depending on your DAW !
But give it atry ! To reduce the latency you will have to play on the number of samples in the asio4all buffer !
Cheers

Thank you all for the replies.
From what I understand if I use ASIO4all I will not be able to use Kronos as a soundcard. Is that right?
If so, it has no advantage because I would still have to carry extra acessories (cables and mixer). I´d better to continue using Fast Track Pro2.
BasariStudios,
3-4ms is pretty good!!! I don't know how to get this. Does more RAM memory mean less latency?
levioter
I've tested using Kontakt as a stand alone. Within a DAW I think it would be worst. But I will try it.
So I guess there is no way to reduce latency unless Korg release an ASIO driver for Kronos. It is a pity because I really liked this feature

Hi Santos, the Latency depends on the strength of the computer, my computer
is custom built for Audio with 16 GB RAM but i also have High End Sound Cards.

Bsbsantos, you can use ASIO4all with your Kronos, that's the point of it. There's no supplied ASIO driver so you use the generic ASIO4All one. You can even make an aggregate device where you select both your soundcards (Kronos and FastTrack) in the ASIO4All control panel, though there'll be some tweaking to get it right.
The latency depends mainly on the CPU speed and the quality of the soundcard (hardware, driver and interface). For a comparison, I have a recent laptop with a Core i7 2670 quad core cpu, with my Fast Track Pro (1), a USB soundcard, I can go down to the lowest latency setting in its control panel which makes it like 4-5ms. With my previous laptop, a Core2Duo P9500, I had to mostly use the second lowest setting and I got about 7ms. Butn my desktop, an older Core2Quad Q6600 I have an E-MU PCI card and can go down do 2ms if playing single instruments. When I have a lot of things running though, I usually keep it at 7ms. All computers have sufficient RAM to not stress the OS, but nothing special. 6GB in the desktop and 8 in the new laptop, 4 in the old.
Long story short; you should be able to get decent results with most semi-recent mid-high range computers.

Bsbsantos,
Like geoelectro said it is possible to use asio4all with the kronos as a sound card and this is working with reasonnable latency given your Cpu power.
As you an i5 this should work for you !
Just make a try ! You may just have to tweak the buffer size to reduce the latency to the minimum acceptable (essentially to avoid audio clicks when too low. )
Cheers
