Sampling Instruments with ESX-1

Post by MonoxideC »

Hey, I am thinking about investing in an ESX-1, and was wondering if someone could clarify something for me.

Right now, I use a microSampler to play back a few of my old VSTi synths that I haven't been able to replicate. I basically just sampled each octave dry, and the microSampler has a feature that plays the correct pitches between samples. For example:

Code: Select all

   |C2.wav |C3.wav |C4.wav
------------------------------------------------------
B C D E F G A B C D E F G A B C D E
The microSampler works ok for this kind of stuff, but it has limited effects, and also has no glide/portamento, no loop points, no full ASDR envelopes, no LFO, etc, so I have to leave those parts of the program in when I sample. It gets me closer than what I can get with my R3 or my M50, but it's still not quite right on some sounds.

I know this probably isn't the intended purpose of the ESX-1, but does anyone know if it would work better than the microSampler? Can patches/samples be loaded via Program Changes? Can samples be loaded directly off the SD card, or is some sort of manual copy/load operation required?

I've been wanting an electribe for a while for other reasons, so if the ESX-1 isn't a good choice for replacing my microSampler, I'll probably go with the EMX-1.

Thanks for any guidance!

Patterns can be changed via program change, samples can't.

you have to load them from the card into memory before you can use them

and I don't think the ESX will do a better job of reproducing your synths - you can't do a multisampled instrument with it.

You can load a single sample into a keyboard part and it will play at different pitches across the keys, but you can't use different samples at different octaves, just the one sample, so it will get pretty distorted at extreme pitches

Thanks for the info, looks like I'll have to make due with the microSampler.
