Midi controller for Triton rack???

Post by mahavishnujoel »

I've been thinking about buying a Korg Triton module with a Midi controller instead of a Triton LE keyboard. Is this a good idea? if so.. which midi controllers will work better with this rack? i have my eyes on M-Audio's Axiom 61 controller and it seems it can get the job done, but im a little unexperienced when it comes to Midi and all that stuff, so I just want to make sure it will be a good buy...

The main thing you have to remember is that whatever the controller interface is (knobs, sliders, wheels, etc.) you have to make those controls meaningful at the program (module) level.

You may miss some dedicated controls like the arp tempo and start/stop, but they can usually be assigned - see the midi spec appendix in the Triton's manual for clues about setting up your master board.

Be prepared to spend a bit of time getting things right from a performance gesture standpoint. What you grab with "natural" (learned) motion will be different from synth to synth -- and certainly from Triton to M-audio.

The Tri-Rack is an excellent choice -- essentially the guts from a T-Studio; you can trick it out to equal or exceed the Triton Extreme if you add EXB boards. If you're primarily playing synths keep an eye out for 7 (vintage) and 9 (trance attack).

Thanks for the quick reply!!!
the M-Audio Axiom 61 which is the one i have in mind has the following features (knobs sliders,etc...) which I think is enough considering that Live editing is not going to be one of my main priorities. the keyboard will most likely be used for its sounds not so much for sequencers, arps and other stuff... thanks also for the advice on the vintage and trance sounds... my choice of sounds goes more along the lines of pianos, pads, ambient sounds, vintage synths, strings, and very little of trance sounds but experimenting never hurts right?

M-Audio Axiom 61 features:
61-key velocity-sensitive semi-weighted-action keyboard with assignable aftertouch

intuitive custom LCD display, centered on keyboard for optimum visibility

4 zone buttons for stacking and splitting sounds on up to 4 MIDI channels

8 assignable trigger pads

8 assignable rotary encoder knobs

9 assignable faders

9 assignable buttons with LED lights for DAW feedback

6 dedicated transport controls with LED lights for DAW feedback

6 edit buttons

dedicated track up/down, bank </>, mute, and solo buttons

dedicated patch +/– buttons

assignable pitch bend and modulation wheels

octave up/down; transpose up/down

20 non-volatile memory locations

memory dump via SysEx

4 keybed velocity curves and 3 fixed velocity settings

4 pad velocity curves, 3 fixed settings, and unique ‘step’ velocity curves

2 assignable pedal inputs

powered via USB or optional power supply

built-in USB MIDI interface including standard MIDI In and Out jacks

all controllers fully programmable to MIDI controller number and channel

Controller Mute function mutes controller output to avoid parameter jumps

Snapshot function transmits all current controller settings

on/off rocker switch

Will this be a good controller considering my needs?
Thanks in advance and sorry for any mistakes or signs of being a noobie...

It's an odd thing about the EXB's because although all of them have a slant (studio, classical, trance) they all have sounds useful outside those genres - trance attack has the MOST new synth waves so it ould still be useful to you, and the rack has slots to spare so it can't hurt.

The AXIOM is, I think, touted mostly as somthing to use with softsynths and computer based DAWs (hence the transport functions) but should work well with any hardware synth you care to interface.
