what is the best way to link up the r3 with the kaossilator if you want to use it as a live music set up? Should I use a mixer or a midi interface? does The audio inputs on the r3 only modify an external source or does it allow for the kaossilator to play through it into an amp?
cheers

what exactly are you trying to achieve? "use it as a live music set up" is very vague.
The audio inputs on the R3 allow you to use an external audio source with the vocoder, instead of using the microphone.
Assuming you mean the Kaossilator Pro, not the original Kaossilator, you could connect it to the R3 via midi so their clocks are synchronised and they can communicate via midi, so e.g. the R3 keyboard could trigger sounds in the Kaossilator. You don't need a midi interface for that unless you also want to connect them to a computer.

Thanks for the reply
I am running the original kaossilator. What I meant by a live music setup would be to allow the kaossilator to run independently from the r3 but allow for the sounds to mix. I understand how that could come across as vague, however, my goal is to have the kaossilator supply a base sound and play the r3 along with it for jamming purposes. In this scenario is a mixing board necessary or are there any alternatives available? I do have a midi interface but I am not certain of the logistics in regards to processing the sound. Does the kaossilator require a preamp before contacting the midi interface for live sound purposes?
I hope this doesn't come off too confusing.
cheers

MIDI is a communication language that sends messages, saying which notes are played when and how hard, which controllers are adjusted, which program numbers are used. It carries no sound whatsoever. It can be used for example from a controller keyboard to make another synthesizer make sound, but the MIDI itself does not carry sound. MIDI does not require a preamp because it is a digital signal.
Also the Kaossilator (original - aka the KO1) does not have any MIDI connection.
I'd recommend getting a small mixer. Even if you are just thinking about contemplating expanding your setup in the future, a mixer is a must. It will make it much easier to expand in the future, and give you more control over the level of each instrument. For example you could then add a KP3 or mini-KP after the mixer for looping, or add some effects processors on the mixer's FX sends to apply varying amounts of reverb (for example) to the synth. Etc.
The audio inputs on the R3 can pass through audio but it is far from an ideal setup. It is mainly intended for processing external sounds through the R3's synthesis and effects. Otherwise, it is often considered bad practise to daisy chain synths in the way you are suggesting. There would likely be some loss of sound quality.

Hey guys, I have the Kaossilator Pro and the R3. Can someone tell me step by step how to play them together? I tried using the manuals but clearly I am doing something wrong... I want to play the R3 and use the sound to record some loops on the K Pro without using the mic input on the K Pro.
I know nothing about this. I`m just fooling around with my expensive toys...
