MIDI data not received by R3 + USB connection not working
hi all,
i am trying to load on my R3 the new "Korg USA R3 Expansion.r3l" file but got some problems:
first i tried using the R3 editor, i installed the korg USB-MIDI drivers, then installed the Editor, then hooked-up via USB the R3.
the Editor, in the option menu, see as devices, a part from my USB audio interface and USB midi interface, the following: "USB speakers" and "USB speakers[2]"
i try sending the .r3l file selectiong firstly USB speakers then USB speakers[2] but no luck. i always get the error "MIDI deviced not specified".
then i tried with MIDIOx using standard MIDI connection with MIDI cable, i was able to get MIDI DUMP from R3, then send the file to R3 w/o receiving any error form MIDIOx but in the end nothing changed in R3.
in R3 i have set Protect:Off and SysEx:Enabled, MIDI channel is 1, the same on which i transmits.
so the question is:
how you load programs on R3?
when receiving files, something change on R3 display showing that R3 is correctly receiving sysex?
how can i upload this new programs?
thanks!

Did you download the latest Korg USB-midi driver from the website?
After installing the USB-Midi driver, did you run the Install Korg USB-midi device application? The applications are in the Korg R3 folder. Installing the driver isn't enough. You have to install the device using the app for the driver to use the R3.
Does the Korg USB-midi driver show the R3 listed? The driver will show all the Korg devices that have been installed.
Did you run the Uninstall Korg USB-midi device application? It will show you all of the midi drivers you have on your system and let you remove any that are old, unused, or not working.
The R3 editor need to use the following driver settings:
MIDI IN: "R3 KBD/Knob"
MIDI OUT: "R3 Sound"
Don't bother using SYSEX dumps. Get the editor working and use it.

hi xmlguy, thank for reply.
well, i just installed the USB-MIDI Driver plus the Editor. is this the USB-MIDI device application you mention?
to be clear i installed this driver:
PC:Driver:Korg_USB_MIDI_Win_112.zip
and this editor:
PC:Software:R3_Sound_Editor_Ver_101 .zip
but, when opening the Editor, in the option i did not see
MIDI IN: "R3 KBD/Knob"
MIDI OUT: "R3 Sound"
just generic "USB-speaker" both for MIDI IN and MIDI OUT.
i also tried to un-install the Driver and in the list i have a entry MIDI-20: korg r3....

The installer package 'Korg_USB_MIDI_Win_112.zip' puts the driver files on your system, but you need to run the application:
Start > Programs > KORG > USB-MIDI Driver > Install KORG USB-MIDI Device
This actually associates the driver with the device, otherwise Windows continues to try to use its own (incorrect) drivers.
You may need to repeat this step if you ever use a different USB port.
And the .r3l file is not SYSEX. I think the file structure is similar but not the same, so you won't be able to send it to the R3 with a normal SYSEX utility like MIDI-OX.
It also looks like you may be suffering from the MIDI Device limit in windows... Unfortunately I don't know much about that. xmlguy should be able to help you though I think.

Hi X-trade, thanks for explanation, i was missing the step:
Start > Programs > KORG > USB-MIDI Driver > Install KORG USB-MIDI Device
i will try again.
anyway on MIDI-OX monitor i see Data be transmitted w/o any problem even if coming from .r3l file. i just thought (maybe wrong) that apart form extension it was like a SysEx file....

Make sure you do it while the R3 is connected to your computer. And after installing the driver for the particular USB port your R3 is connected to, if you connect it to another port next time you will have to install it again. Just so you knowkimu wrote:Hi X-trade, thanks for explanation, i was missing the step:

all this afternoon i tried to make the Editor see the R3 but there was nothing to do.
i follow your step:
hooked up R3 to pc with USB cable
- installed korg USB-MIDI drivers
- installed USB-MIDI device (and here the R3 is correctly recognized)
but when I load the Editor, R3 is not recognized by the Editor itself. no way to chose R3 as MIDI IN or MIDI OUT devices...
the only thing i gained is that the drivers of my EDIROL UM-2ex (USB-MIDI interface) have been destroyed and when i try to re-install it, WinXP keeps on install the Edirol as USB-Speaker instead using the Edirol Drivers.... damn PC

Run the "Uninstall Korg USB-midi device" application like I mentioned previously. It lets you see what midi drivers are loaded. There may be a bad midi device that is interfering with the R3 device. That application lets you get rid of any old, bad, or unused midi devices, if you change the check box to allow you to remove other manufactures midi devices. Then after you clear out any midi devices out, remove the R3 driver and re-add it with the "Install Korg device" app.
That USB speaker device is a possible culprit, as it probably shouldn't be doing anything with midi, so I don't see why it should ever show up in the R3 editor config.

well i have run the un-install USB-MIDI and found about 20 midi devices/drivers installed that anyway i use really, e.g. the one of Novation Xio or of Virus TI, cannot rid of them for the R3...
there anyway lot's of entries in the list named "USB Speaker" but i do not have any USB speakers, maybe i can delete these devices?
why XP see my Edirol USB-MIDI interface as "USB Speakers" is mysterious to me...

Yes, I would delete all of them except the ones that you absolutely need at this very moment. If that doesn't work, then I'd delete ALL of the midi drivers using the Uninstall app, then install the R3 alone for testing purposes, then add the other drivers back one by one to a max of 10 at one time. Windows has problems with more than 10.
I am having a similar problem with my radias.
I cant get windows 7 to recognize it.
When I use the korg uninstall utillty it appears as thoughI have two instances of radias installed
but when I go into control panel - devices manager there is no sign of the korg radias driver.
when I connect it via midi cables to another interface it seems to work, but I want to be able to use the USB-MIDI port.
any advice???

You won't see the Radias driver in devices manager, even when it's installed and working properly. That's because Korg devices run within the USB-midi driver, and USB-midi isn't a device type in windows.
All that matters is that the Korg USB-midi driver shows your Korg Device listed when you bring up it's control panel when running the "Configure Korg USB-Midi driver" application. When your device is listed there, then it should be available to see by any application that can open midi ports.
