MIDI: DAMPER / SUSTAIN HOW TO DAISY CHAIN

Post by Enoch »

I own 2 M1's, an M1R, and a Kurzweil 2000R. They are daisy chained by midi cables, and it works basically. However, only the M1 to which I have the damper pedal / sustain pedal plugged in, responds by sustaining notes. How can I arrange things so that when I press the sustain pedal, all 4 boxes are affected, all the notes on all the synthesizers sustain?

What happens if you plug the controlling M1 direct into the M1R?
Does the MIDI receive light when the pedal is pushed down, and released?

Can you post the order you have your keyboards connected in and to what ports? Something like this:

M1 a OUT -> M1 b IN
M1 b THRU -> M1R IN

And also, tell us what you want to accomplish (aside from the pedal); which keyboards should control which other keyboards? I'd bet you're either misunderstanding the difference between MIDI OUT and THRU or you've got something else going on. A proper daisy chain is impossible with MIDI devices unless each one is able to *combine* its own output with the input it receives (or you're using a number of MIDI merger units).

Take a step back and tell us the big picture of what you want to do and we can tell you what other gear you need, if any, or what connections you need to make to accomplish what you want.

Sleep on It & Try Again

Post by Enoch »

It is amazing how sometimes you seem to try everything & can't get the thing to work. Then you go to bed & get up the next day and things can be got to work.

My problems were 1) I had some of the midi cables hooked to Midi Out when it should have been Midi Thru. 2) One of the million parameters on the Kurzweil was set wrong, to wit, Under its Midi, the "Receive" settings had LocalKeyboardCh set to 1 instead of "none." Changing to "none" made sustain work with the Kurzweil box. Using Thur instead of Out solved the Korg boxes. So now, sustain is sustaining throughout the 4 box system. Sigh.

Thanks so much for responding to my question.

If curious, I had the 4 boxes in this order: 1st M1 Keyboard to Kurzweil 2000R to 2nd M1 Keyboard to M1R. I omit the A/B switch box I use to let me use the M1R to change the programs on the 2nd M1 Keyboard, since it has some missing number pad buttons.
