Wierd sounds from old Korg DS-8

I've just got my hands on a DS8, but it generate some very bizarre sounds, and nothing makes sense of the display characters. The initial boot screen is ok, but after that nothing works.

According to this link: http://soundprogramming.net/synthesizers/korg/korg_ds_8 The DS8 can go into a "glitch mode" and that pretty much describes my problem.

Anyone know if I can get back to the opriginal setting (resetting to factory preset does not have any effect)

Dude, I'm sad to say that you will need the Factory Preset card that should have come with your DS-8. That same thing happened to me nearly 20+ years ago when I got that thing as a Christmas present. Bummer. Good luck.
