Newbie question: Combis and effects

Post by GuyM »

Another probably very obvious query so apologies

I have in my setlist for live, a new split Combi with a Bass Synth on the left and an organ on the right …I used a preset program for each sound

If i want to alter the Res cut off on the bass synth and the rotor speed to be fast rather than its default slow on the organ….can i do that at the combi level or do i have to create 2 new variant programs to use?

I went into Combi edit and changed both sounds and ‘wrote’ the Combi, but it did not retain my updates…hence the question

Thanks

This is one of the things that trips up a lot of people at first. So let's briefly cover it.

The first thing you absolutely must know is that any changes made using the Real Time knobs and sliders are NOT saved. These are "real time" controls, meant for performance.

The next thing is that you can make extensive, deep parameter level changes (such as resonance) to your programs at the combi level using Tone Adjust and these WILL BE retained on saving. The button to get to Tone Adjust is right below the RT Knobs button on the panel. Often, resonance is one of the default options set up for a timbre in Tone Adjust. You'll want to have a look at that.

Tone Adjust is one of the most powerful tools in the Kronos, and it's often overlooked. Anyway, try that. You aren't limited to the default options on that screen either. You can change them to the suit your needs. Note, you need to make sure you are editing the correct timbre number, which you select on the screen. Most important is that any changes you make are saved only in the combi and do not affect the original programs. Thus it's power.

So for your bass program, you'll want to increase the resonance inside of the Tone Adjust screen.

As for the rotary speaker effect, you just need to go into the effect itself and change the Speed Switch value to Fast. That should make the rotary speaker start in its faster speed.

Absolutely!
I struggled with this for months before I realized that Tone Adjust settings are saved, and Real Time settings are not.

At the Combi level, you select which timbre you want the controls to affect. And I think you can also remap different timbre parameters to preferred knobs etc.
