I think it is a built in limiter and it causes isssues with some of my combis when i have drums, karma and more going all at once. Usually after the monitors heat up and even faster to that point when the volume is way up.
Its just a few problem sounds here and there and those sounds do not have issues in headphones. Mostly the drums are what get cut back, similar to what a limiter does. Kronos sounds are powerful.
First time i ever had studio Monitors, i always used keyboard amps and PA systems.
I am going to keep the monitors because they work great for most of the sounds and also great for playing sampled wave file albums that i play via kronos.
I can't imagine needing more bass range than comes with 8's -but for me it is too much except for a few deep droning pads or bass sounds which i rarely use. Its good to have the bass range on hand, i guess, and keep it tamed by EQ until it is needed.
If you already have a PA or Keyboard amp, then you are covered. I still have to go out and get a Keyboard amp or PA system. Definitely you should go out and get some Monitors.
Which gen do you have? i have the square Gen one KRK rocket 5 and thought the bass was not up to the organs and bass sounds of the Kronos. I always use DT880 pros or QSC K10. If the newer gen are better that would be great if yours are Gen 1 as well i wonder why mine doesn't seem up to the task.
I got mine less than a year ago at Guitar center and seems they match Gen 3.
I never really checked what Gen they were. I just went in, tried them out and it was a toss up between the JBL equivalent and KRK rokit. JBL had a bit more color to the sound but not enough to make me think less of KRK.
I even prefer my KRK to my headphones and the KRK outdo the bass on my headphones and thats why i EQ the bass down on KRK.

^^this link ^^ has some reviews and i read one that talked about impressive bass range. Like i said, i turned away from the KRK 8 because it was just too much bass, although i could have done EQ work to make the 8's work. Its just my ears were Headphone conditioned at the time and the 5's were just right for that, especially when i just need them for a small room and mostly don't use them because of others in the house or neighbors on the other side of the wall. You really can thump the walls with em and setting them on top of boxes takes the bass to a whole other level. Literally the surface you set them on can enhance the sound.
Again, I have issues with the KRK 5 with sound drop out on some Kronos Combis in certain areas of certain songs. So it seems like certain frequencies are barred by a limiting system. Specs list a frequency response range, just a clue, but i am not so experienced with exactly what that means. I never get crackling or buzzing, it is always clean and i think there is a built in limiter or some system to drop sound out before the monitors ever send an overwhelming signal through.
I assume its all to protect it. It is really nice sound for sure. But not the best out there. I paid just over $300 for a pair. They come individually at around $150 and you buy two separate boxes to make a pair.
