Restore Kronos from "white screen" - keep saved pr
So last night at a gig (naturally, in one of the biggest rooms we play), the Kronos was fine during setup. But about 3 minutes before we went on, I noticed that it was playing the wrong sounds. So just to be safe (and thinking I may have inadvertently changed a mapping in my combi), I shut it off and restarted it.
Booted up like normal (loaded my custom KSC files, etc..)... except to the dreaded "white screen" instead of going into Setlist Mode. All controls were frozen and it made no sound. I tried it 2-3 more times and the same issue. So I made due with approximating sounds on my prophet 12 for the night.
Today I pulled it apart and checked all the cable connections, reseated the ram, etc.. Same problem. I started searching on here and came across this thread, talking about restoring it using the DVDs. Great, hopefully I can restore it. But I have a problem. Unfortunately, my last full backup is a couple months old. If I wipe this thing back and have to restore from my last backup (safe on the 2nd SSD), I'll have a crap-ton of work to do to get this thing back into playing shape. Yes, I'm a dumbass for not having a recent backup, but now I'm just hopeful there may be an alternative.
So my question is - using the restore options, is there a way to be able to keep my programs/setlists, etc. intact? I haven't done it yet (still need to track down my DVDs).

If you do a re-install from the DVDs, it will preserve your user data as long as you don't select Option 1 - Format and Reinstall. If you use Option 1, it will clear the entire contents of SSD1.
Note that if you have a second SSD installed, the data on SSD2 should be preserved regardless of which option you choose.

AWESOME! Thank you - I was hoping that would be the case. Now to just get hold of the DVDsSeedyLee wrote:If you do a re-install from the DVDs, it will preserve your user data as long as you don't select Option 1 - Format and Reinstall. If you use Option 1, it will clear the entire contents of SSD1.

Just some thoughts...
Will the reinstall clear the set lists, including the pre-load etc ?
As SeedyLee said, the other user data should be preserved, but I think it depends where they're are saved.
This could be a hardware problem rather than software, but naturally the first trial would be to reinstall, then possibly a reformat(as a last resort),just to cover the basics.
One could use a spare ssd and install from scratch...maybe..??
(Disconnecting the other two, using it as a boot drive and finally applying the authorising process etc....which is straightforward....this could prove the working of the Kronos,or not, without any risk to data).
Then connect the original ssd and examine its contents(you may find the original set lists and your own data, then can move them..??)....or try using the drive again.
I may be totally off the mark with my suggestions, but perhaps worth considering.
Best Wishes.

so I did the reinstall - chose option 2. It wiped all the combis, setlists, and program banks From A to I-G and U-G. Once I put OS 3.0.4 on, all the extended program banks came back (fortunately that's where my custom sounds were). Everything that was on disk still seemed to be there. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get my Setlists or Combis back. And because I'm a dumbass, I didn't have a recent backup about (18 months old). I swear I thought I had made a more recent backup, but I just can't seem to track one down. So I'm going to spend the next couple weeks putting all my combis back together.
But it is up and functional.

I'm honestly not sure. The Kronos had been working fine for about an hour beforehand, and all of my gear totally passed the pre-flight check I always do when I set up for a gig.pedro5 wrote:Pleased you're up and running again....although it wasn't exactly what you really wanted,by saving set lists etc.
I had a feeling that may have happened....but,at least your Kronos works.
Wonder what caused the initial problem ?
Best Wishes.
The only thing I can think of is that the night before (at another gig), is that the Kronos fell over (in it's case) when I pulled it out of my car. But it had ZERO problems throughout the night on Friday and when I pulled it apart on sunday, all of the cables were tight (along with the memory), and I could see no discernible damage.

I had this happen as well some time ago, exactly as you describe it. You don't happen to use a third party program to change your set lists, comments, combinations do you? I ended up with a corrupted PCG file. I know it was the file because just happened to have done a backup before it flaked out AND had another Kronos on hand. Loaded the file to the second Kronos, booted up.... to a white screen.
I ask about the third party program because I have never been able to find a cause for the PCG corruption and curious if there are any common threads!
Either way, glad you are back up and running!
