Greetings

I just purchased a Korg TR, mostly because I like Korg's functionality, though I do like Yamaha sounds better...

I've been speaking with Fischek online and he has been of great help but I need some more details and btw everyone, thanks for posting the great samples, I really think I am going to try and get the piano from Irishacts.

I want to buy some Ram (probebly 2x 32 bit) cards to install, but I can't find them anywhere on the internet to buy. Anyone have a link?

My understanding is a bit novice so forgive me. So, once I have the ram installed and buy a sample, I will also need a memory card in the back slot? And then I will have to load these sounds each time I turn it on?

I have only begun to really plumb the TR's base waveforms, as my method of working has changed over time, but on my old 01Wfd, the key to its best piano was to carefully split and layer the 4' piano, 8' piano, some strings mixed low under the whole thing for some fake body resonance and an added bit of subtle upright bass in the lower 2 octaves. That enabled me to zero in on the juiced-up soloing piano I wanted. While acoustic piano is a very subjective sound in the synth & sampler world, you can come up with a couple of rather potent pianos with a little programming effort. Yes, add-on cards featuring the total memory of the host synth given over to piano alone or plugs like Synthology will always be better. However, Korgs have real beef, so take some time to coax it out rather than leaping to a different realm. Bet you'll be surprised.

Thanks. I know, it's rather sad I couldn't find them, even as a user of ebay. I have sen some on ebay but I wasn't sure if they were legit or not. Thanks for the link, I must have over looked these.

BTW, are you sure these are compatible with KORG TR-61. Sorry for my idiocy, I am completely new to this stuff. What else does one need to download new patches other than these? The Sampling card and a memory card?

Yes. It is 100% compatible.
I have bought them for myself from this seller.
And that's why I recommend this guy as a "trusted" seller.
I've got 64mb sampling RAM now.
And everything is working OK.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here. I'm into my second week with my TR. I read both the OG and the PG on loading sounds, but when I load the Steinway sounds from this thread, I get some strange results. I started with the stwakai.ksc file, and I checked the stwakai.pcg file and at the bottom it says Select .KSC Allocation: Clear, then it says there is no readable data. I continued on to load the multipsamples - the STWY.KMP file, and it loaded all of the MS000001-18 or so, but I understand that those are multi-samples (KMP), and that the .KSC file is a script with the names for the Programs and Combis. I suppose those live in the RAM. Then I loaded the STWAKAI.PCG , thinking that they would be the actual programs that use the .KSP and .KMP files. It loaded Stein 1 -5 in my D Program bank, but they sound really crazy! They have a tremendous echo in them, and if I hold the notes, different notes are played, seemingly at random. I can't find any Combis that it loaded, although the loading screen said something about Combi C000 and Program D000. I've tried loading the different kinds of files in various order and seem to be stuck in bedlam. After you guys pick yourselves off the floor, could you help me out here? At least I knew how to save my custom Combis and Programs that I had tweaked onto the SD beforehand! Thanks!

I do have 64MB of EDO RAM that seems to be functioning properly.
When I re-load my custom sounds, I just load the .PCG, then the .KSC file, and it over-writes what I loaded from the Steinway folder, but it doesn't seem to work that way when I load the Steinway sounds.

not sure if this helps or not as I have an extreme not TR and have just loaded the Steinway sample and it works fine.

Load the PCG file first.

Does it then ask if you also want to load the KSC. file?
If so tick the box and this should load everything in one go.

There are no combi's within the pcg just programs (stein 1-5)

I wonder if my RAM could be bad? No, that doesn't make sense - otherwise I couldn't reload my custom sounds.

After I posted last night, I did try to reload them in the same order I loaded my custom sounds, PCS first, and got the same results.

I was sure that I later tried loading the PCG first, but... it was late!

When I figure out what I've done wrong, I'll post. Hopefully it'll help someone else.

I had no problems loading PCG files by following the "step by step"
instructions that fischek provided here.

Just a low-budget suggestion, try loading up the piano program from the Triton Classic factory preload PCG file - patch B065. The Triton Classic's piano sample was extremely bright and punchy, and this program really brought it down to earth and made it sound much warmer and fuller sounding. I'd imagine it would do the same for the TR's piano sample. It's a great program. It might do what you want with the sound, and you don't have to buy the sample expansion board.

You could, but there's been talk of people having problems with certain "compatible" RAM boards not actually being compatible. This dealer seems to sell RAM that is fully compatible with Korg Products.

I'd assume the 16MB board being sold here is compatible with the TR, but it would be great if someone could confirm this.
