people who actually take music Seriously and not with toys?
Someone would really honestly tell me that Monotron or Volka or Polka or Molka
would be something SERIOUS about music?
I know one can make music with Pro Tools and another with Fruity Loops but
come on, lets get real.
They sound pretty good. Nobody is pretending they can make an entire album on just the Volcas, but they're pretty inspiring to actually play.
Apart from sampling and creativity from the workflow, they are excellent in a live environment.
Actually, if you wanted to, you COULD make a whole album with nothing but Volca's.
Too often great music is equated with great (and expensive) gear recorded in expensive studios which have expensive plug-ins and ditto outboard gear.
But a cheap instrument in the hands of a great composer can bring forth great music, while the most expensive instruments in the hands of a poor composer will always make the music sound like polished garbage.

It's a fun toy. Get one and just play with it. I have a collection of a few Korg gadgets myself.

The same kind of things that Zappa might have done, namely , make music. It all depends on how far you wish to develop artistic interpretation I suppose.

Volcas

I think the volcas are great, 3 oscillators for bass sounds is amazing. I use them as external sound modules and sonically fit great into my music. While they're not a full on workstation, they are fun to use and let's face it, if you're not having fun making music, then what's the point?
Korg Kronos 73, KingKorg, Arp Odyssey, X5DR, Roland System 1m, Juno 6, JX-3P, JX-10, MKS-50, D10, Moog Sub Phatty, Novation Bass Station 2, DSI Prophet 08, Tetra, Analogue Solutions Telemark V2 and Leipzig-S, Nord Lead A1, Dreadbox Erebus, Waldorf Pulse, NI Maschine, Komplete 9 Ultimate, Arturia SparkLe, Beatstep, Spectrasonics Omnisphere U-HE Diva (Best Soft Synth ever) + other Softsynths

I'm neither. I program synths and sequences, and I think the Volca's a pretty cool. Especially at that price :-)

That's what purists said of the 303 and 808, and everyone knows what happened next.

I think there are also clashes in styles/cultures here. I know you make middle-eastern patches for your respective cultural music style. Western music on the other hand is very different, especially dance music, it's more structured with simpler musical lines, and explores artificial electronic sounds in a different way than imitating natural ones.

As one example, middle-eastern sounds don't make obvious use of the cutoff or resonance to make filter sweeps, whereas western electronica intentionally does. I'd almost go as far as saying the more artificial the better, for that particular style. And it's all about the quality of that filter sweep, and so on.

Western dance also uses programmed step sequencing and arps, whereas Middle eastern doesn't. Etc. etc.

Horses for courses, as they say. Why not try taking middle-eastern playing techniques and concepts and apply it to the unashamed electronic instruments you shun? Start a new genre. :)
