SSD replace
I just replaced the original 60GB ssd with a 256GB SSD. Cloned it and adjusted partition. Initially it was showing the correct size. Started showing up as 56GB after 2 days

This is a great thread - I've just replaced my 30GB drive with a Samsung 250GB drive... instructions from this thread helped massively. Clonezilla and EaseUS Partition Master (paid for version) worked perfectly first time.
I didn't expect much of a boot up speed improvement, but it's taken over 1 minute off boot time too!
Thank you all.

...why say more?
Re: Replacement System SSD with a bigger one / Issue
Hi. I've finally managed to replace my old 30 gb SSD with a new 256 Gb Samsung 850, using my Mac
First I tried the Korg DVD installationl: it drove me nuts because the process was always stopping halfway through. Then I read somewhere in this forum that the maximum size allowed for the boot SSD is 128 Gb, and the only way to get a larger boot disk is cloning the old SSD to a new one.
I used the "dd" Terminal command to clone the drive: you just need to be careful to identify the source and the destination disks. Start typing "diskutil list", press enter and you'll get a list of the connected drives (see attached screenshot).
Then look for your source drive and note its device number (/dev/disk3, in this example). Do the same with the destination drive, let's say it's /dev/disk2. Then type "sudo dd if=/dev/disk3 of=/dev/disk2" and press enter (device numbers of course could be different in your configuration). Type your login password: you won't see it, but don't worry and press enter. In a matter of minutes your old drive will be cloned sector by sector on the new one.
To resize the Korg partition I used Gparted Live. You need to initialize an USB thumb drive, format in MS-DOS FAT with GUID partition map, then download the ZIP archive with the most recent Gparted Live folder https://sourceforge.net/projects/gparte ... p/download and copy all the files on the USB thumb drive. Restart your Mac holding the Alt key and you'll see an "EFI boot" icon: start your Mac from there and follow the instructions until Gparted starts (you'll have to select your keyboard type and language). Use a laptop if possible, and you won't have any driver issues.
On this forum you'll find plenty of instructions about using Gparted, no need to repeat them. Good luck!

Re: Replacement System SSD with a bigger one / Issue
Dammit, i'm so stupid i don't understand any of this.
i have two kronos's - original 73 & an LS 88
I want to install an extra SSD on each
i haven't a clue about all this cloning and mdos and all these technical jargony terms. i'm genuinely THAT thick.
could someone possibly walk me through what to do and what to get in as simple a way as possible?
can't i just have an extra drive that will boot up the files i save straight to the system like the original SSD does?
i just want extra space - not like with the USB ports where you have to load them onto the SSD before you can load them into the keyboard.
i could really really use some help with this please.
thanks for any help at all!

Yes, you can simply add an SSD to your existing drive. Why many of replaced the original one is because these drives getting old, they do wear after many reads and writes.

Hiya, thanks for the reply. could you give me an idea of which one to get (for both kronos one and LS) and whether i'll need a caddy and screws n stuff? thanks very much!

Re: Replacement System SSD with a bigger one / Issue
SSD, and screws plus a SATA lead, should be all that is required. The SATA lead may well need to have a right angled connector on the motherboard end, but it'll be possible to see what's what when the bottom cover has been removed.

Re: Replacement System SSD with a bigger one / Issue
Hi there,
A few things :
1) About SATA data cables, for the LS 88 since it has the newer motherboard/MOBO, you will need a double right angled one. This because with a straight SATA connection on the motherboard side, it will be touching the metal hammers of a few keys and you don't want that. So double 90 degrees and also make sure to buy a 24'' for a 88.
2) If your new SSD will be a secondary/slave and you keep the original as the master, IIRC in my Kronos 2 (and therefore probably the LS) it is connected to the SATA1 connector on the MOBO. The other/unused MOBO SATA connector is identified on the PCB as SATA0. Since the MOBO will always boot using the lower-numbered SATA connector first, make sure the original/master is plugged in the SATA0 instead and your new SSD on the SATA1. Otherwise, the MOBO will try to boot on the secondary/slave and won't find the system files to start. So if needed, invert them at the SSD rack/holder instead of on the MOBO (easier).
3) About the SSD, don't buy a cheap brand. Years ago I went with a Samsung 860 EVO and zero problems since day one. Mounting screws came with it. For me, 256 GB is still way enough, but you can buy a larger one if you record lots of songs, etc.
4) When you are ready to install with the Kronos upside down, as a precaution use a magnetic screwdriver, otherwise place little pieces of cardboard or paper around the SSD rack/holder. Tiny screws can be tricky to hold and then fall while installing the SSD. So instead of falling in an invisible place, they will end up on your little temporary paper/cardboard.
5) Oh and of course before starting anything make sure to disconnect the AC plug, touch the metal chassis to discharge from any static electricity, etc.
6) When you tested your thing and it's time to screw back the wooden panel, place all screws where they go and tighten them well except the bigger ones holding the action. For them, tighten just enough to hold the keyboard assembly for now. Then place your Kronos on pillows or soft material on its rear side (where connectors and AC plug cord are). Use one hand to keep your Kronos at about 90 degrees up this way and then tighten the bigger screws. This ensures the action will be correctly positioned and the front of the keys won't touch the front "bumper" as I call it.
Hope this makes sense. It is not complicated to do, just take your time.

Re: Replacement System SSD with a bigger one / Issue
hi again
i'm looking for stuff, but not entirely confident; in the right places.
is this the sort of sata cable i should be getting for the LS? ...both ends 90 degrees?
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Aptii-Cable-Ri ... 80&sr=8-15
(can't find it in 24")
also, what should i be getting for the kronos 1 73? is it the same thing? same length etc?
and can i use the same SSD drive you mentioned for both keyboards? at 250GB? are there better ones?
and do you know if these are the type of screws i'll need to mount the SSDs?
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255732519222 ... R76lzq6jZQ
sorry for all the questions; i do feel like i'm getting somewhere though. thank you!

Re: Replacement System SSD with a bigger one / Issue
Hello there,
Yes, the SATA cable you found will be fine. It will be a bit long, but no worries as you can use some tie wraps to keep it along the other wires and far from the MOBO heat sink, etc. For the Kronos 1 73, the SATA connectors on the earlier MOBO should not so much be in the way of the hammers so you actually don't need a double right angle in that case, but using the cable you found on both Kronos units should be just fine as well. Or you could go with a SATA cable with only one right angle as well in 24'' for the Kronos 1 73. It is up to you.
For the drives, for sure Samsung SSDs are good and reliable. 250 GB is a lot for a Kronos already, unless you record lots of songs every month. But every year electronics evolve rapidly, so maybe now 500 GB or even 1 TB SSDs cost the same or less than when I bought mine some years ago. So for sure you could go for 500 GB or more. The mounting screws you found are correct as well.
Just did a little collage to show what it will look like (from my K2). You can see the SSD screws on the side, etc. In my case, I also unscrewed a few more things around to have more space to work. Just take notes or pics as you work when you unscrew PCBs or things, etc. Then you cannot forget how it was installed before when it's time to reassemble. Start upgrading the K1 73, as it will be easier. The K2 and LS have additional metallic reinforcement plates to undo so to reach the MOBO connectors, so a few extra steps.
