Looking for a Clavioline sound for Kronos?
For those unaware, probably it's most famous use was in Runaway (Del Shannon). Albeit it was called the Musitron by it's "hacker" Max Crook. It was created from the Clavioline and some other bits and pieces.
Lots of folks sub in a Vox organ, but it really is not the same...here is a clear demo of both what the Gibson Clavioline looked like and sounded like in that song:

There is a tutorial by Js Kawa about making this particular variant of the Clavioline sound using the Korg Krome. There should be enough info to be able to make a reasonable recreation of it in the Kronos:

Sorry, but those screens he uses there bear no resemblance to the Kronos 2. I cannot even get to the very first screen displayed in that video haha!voip wrote:There is a tutorial by Js Kawa about making this particular variant of the Clavioline sound using the Korg Krome. The Krome menu system approach is somewhat different to the Kronos, but all of the relevant parameters are present in the Kronos. The Krome uses what is effectively a version of the HD-1 engine in the Kronos.
In the Krome, the Program edits, shown in the video linked to in my previous posting, are done from a Program Edit screen which is called by a front panel Edit button on the Krome, and the selectable items on the "PROG: PAGE SELECT" screen, which appears 42 seconds into the video, correspond almost exactly to the bottom row of screen tabs on the Kronos Program "home" screen. The only difference is Kronos has KARMA whilst the Krome has an arpeggiator.
On the Kronos, hit the Prog button and find an empty Program slot e.g. User-GG 000: Init Program, and try to match the parameter settings that Js Kawa does.
I've given it a go and the end result has been put in a .PCG file that can be downloaded from:
https://app.box.com/s/gppubnj7gnrvcam3ymjf5rny6j7i8ytk
The Clavoline.PCG file contains the entire User-GG bank, of which only slot 00 has the Clavoline Program.
It is not necessary to load the Program into the Kronos. Copy it to a USB thumb drive and just use the Kronos Disk menu and drill down to the Clavoline Program within the .PCG file, which can be previewed without loading. The Program itself can be copied to any destination you choose in the Kronos, provided the Bank is of the HD-1 type.

Thanks voip, still being new to this K2, try to transfer images and processes from a different system was a bit tough.
I'll d/l that, more for the benefit of "reverse engineering" to see how you did it really. The sound will be great though so a big thanks for that!
Thanks also for the more detailed explanation, that helps too.

The Kronos' filing system is almost a degree level topic in itself ;-{
When you insert the thumb drive with the Clavoline.PCG file (yep, it's a typo, since corrected!) into the back of the Kronos, wait several seconds for it to be recognised. Press the Disk button and, at the bottom of the screen, for the Drive Select dropdown, select the RDD. A file list should appear, containing the Clavoline.PCG file. Tap on this and select Open. Another list should now appear, containing "Programs". Tap Open again and the list should contain Bank U-GG. Tap Open again and a list of Programs will appear, with 000 Clavioline at the top. With this Program highlighted, it should be possible to preview the sound, by playing the keyboard. It will not be possible to see the various parameters at this stage. To do so, it will be necessary to tap the Load button on the screen. A Load a Program dialogue box will appear, showing U-GG000:Clavioline in the top and bottom lines. To change the destination, tap on the arrow in the bottom line, and it will be possible to select a destination of your choosing. Once the destination has been chosen, and OK selected, press the Prog button and find the Clavioline Program in the location it was saved in. It can also be searched for, using the looking glass icon on the main Program screen.
Have fun :-)
PS the Kronos doesn't have a dedicated Spring Reverb effect, so Dry Plate reverb was chosen instead.

Just a thought, for anyone wishing to try recreating the Js Kawa Korg Krome Clavioline sound in the Kronos. Be sure to select an empty "Init Program" slot i.e. HD-1 engine, and not an "Init EXi Program" slot, whose sound creation architecture and user interfaces depend on the engine selected, and differ significantly from the Program editing interface in the Krome.
It will almost certainly be possible to recreate the Clavioline sound using the AL-1 synth engine, for example, but not by directly trying to follow Js Kawa's tutorial.
