Should one buy a 2nd Kronos 2 now discontinued? Or a Fantom?

Get the Kronos while you can. There’s not much the Fantom can do that the Kronos can’t do better..

Actually there is the Super natural acoustic sounds which are unique..narf wrote:Get the Kronos while you can. There’s not much the Fantom can do that the Kronos can’t do better..
And then there is the Ableton live like sequencer. (Which you love or hate)
Where the Fantom shines is its interface.. thats someting i really enjoyed..
But with only 2 GB of sample ram, and the number of scenes/comb limited to 512, and only a single arp, it fails where the Kronos shines.

Good question. Typically, over my performance lifetime, I have often had two similar or identical main keyboards which present significant values and advantages, such a back-up redundancy, rehearsal and gis stire placement, and so forth. Most recently, I used three Triton Exs exactly in this manner, with one 88 in my studio for practice and programming, a second in the case for gigs and a third (76 - nice yam keybed and the 3-extra notes really help) at our rehearsal venue.
Right now, I keep a K2/88 in my studio and an LS for rehearsals. I use either for giging, depending on the performance requirements. I might actually grab a 61 if I can find a deal, just for ease of placement and programming duties.
I also have a raft of other boards, but there are very few things that cannot be accomplished with the Kronos.
So ... yes is the shorter answer. If you can afford a couple, the convenience and redundancy is a good value.
One final note - I've had boot issues with the LS, and it is going back to Montreal for warranty service for the second time, so there is a real world example.
