SB Editor Needs .Set File

Post by Bernie9 »

I am trying to show my latest Direct Set in SB Editor v3, but it is not showing, but old ones are. I thought if I made another copy of my current data, and saved it to Disk, it would come up. I saved All Resources by mistake. I can't find how to save so as to show the set lists.

I am sorry, but I went to Media and it said All, but saving that was a BKUP. I opened all but did not see Pa sets. I went to media/utility/full resources, and that was wrong.

When I go to Media, am I at Save at the bottom? I need a bit more info, please

Hi Bernie

The following relates to editing a DIRECT SET in SB editor.
Firstly, the PA4X cannot "SAVE" any DIRECT data - the "MEDIA>>SAVE>>Save All" only relates to internal Keyboard Sets, Styles, Pads, Voice Presets,
SongBook Entries and Set Lists.
When you make a change or create anything in the DIRECT data it is immediately saved into the DIRECT SET on your disk.
So, your Direct SET is already on your disk and is already a .SET so you can simply access it in SB Editor on your PC. Personally, I would make a copy of your direct SET first on your PC (or on your PA4X if you wish in MEDIA>>COPY).

Where is your Direct SET? i.e. on USB, SDcard etc..?

This is how I do it (mine is on a USB):-
  • On PA4X - deassign my DIRECT SET (this is important!!!)
Remove the USB and insert it into my PC
On the PC, make a copy of the whole SET for safety's sake.
    Open SB
    Open the DIRECT .SET
    Make the changes etc..........
Eventually, when done, I ensure my SB-edited DIRECT SET is back on USB
    On the PA4X - insert in PA4X
    Assign the DIRECT SET
    Play....etc.....
Whilst on your PA4X, if you make changes to any of your DIRECT Keyboard Sets, Styles, Pads, Voice Presets, SongBook Entries and Set Lists, those changes are immediately saved onto the DISK within your DIRECT .SET - hence, it is a sensible idea to make a copy of your DIRECT SET before making changes.
You can do this on the PA4X in MEDIA>>copy etc....

The following relates to editing PA4X internal data in SB editor.
  • In MEDIA mode perform a Save All and create a .SET (onto USB so you can remove it easily to place into PC)
    Remove USB
    Insert USB in PC
Perhaps make a copy of the .SET first
    Open SB Editor
    Open the saved .SET
    Make your changes etc....
    Remove USB from PC
    Insert into PA4X
Load the data you want from that .SET (MEDIA>>LOAD)
    Play...
Hope this helps

Cheers

Hi Pete

I have copied your most detailed answer, and am indebted to you. I am fearful of losing my Direct Set again because of my USB going bad, so only need to view the Set Lists to copy and print. My Direct Set is on a USB drive, with a copy on disk and HD.

If I understand this correctly, I can use the USB cable method to view in SB Editor without touching anything and the Set should be on the disc, or de-selecting my direct set on Pa4X, and using just the USB connected to pc.

Personally, I wouldn't waste time connecting your PA4X to your PC.

Try this (but sounds like you have safe copies already so you can ignore my "copying" paranoia  ):-
  • De-select your DIRECT set
Using an inserted USB stick, COPY your DIRECT set to the USB
Remove the USB and insert into PC
Make a copy on the PC's hard drive (then your worries are over)
Run SB Editor and open the set on the USB
Make your changes/printouts or whatever you need to do
Eject USB and insert into PA4X
    You could now:-
....assign it directly from the USB (great way of checking it out)
....copy it onto your PA4X HDD and then assign that copy as DIRECT
IF YOU HAVEN'T made any alterations to the DIRECT SET (e.g. just printed from SB editor) then you could just simply re-select the original
All should be good and you'll have the original safely on your PC in an emergency.

Cheers

I have tried it with and without a USB cable, but a .set will not show in the pc with a copied Bkup/set. It shows everything but .set.

One question is the relation to USB drive and Disk drive, and when the does the Direct Set need to be assigned. It seems like the original USB Stick by itself is not enough, yet you have to de-assign it before pulling the stick.

I will try again tomorrow, but seems so crazy I cannot get a view of my set lists, let alone change anything. I have re-assigned my Direct Set, and looks fine.

Hi Bernie

Don't want to further confuse you but this may help:- A PA4X "SET" is in fact a folder (or directory) and not an individual file so when you see it on a PC it appears as a FOLDER - also... on your PC/Mac you will most likely not see the ".SET" extension - this is often the default for WINDOWS and MAC OSX - so your set WILL be there but you'll only see the name and not the ".SET" on the end of it. SB editor needs to open a SET folder in order to work.
One question is the relation to USB drive and Disk drive, and when the does the Direct Set need to be assigned. It seems like the original USB Stick by itself is not enough, yet you have to de-assign it before pulling the stick.
Any DIRECT set must be selected else you won't see it on your PA4X - this is how you tell the PA4X which SET is to be used as DIRECT. I recommend de-selecting it before making any changes or potentially moving it. If you do not make any changes to it whatsoever, then, yes, you can leave it selected.

But:-
If you do not plan to make any changes to your DIRECT set in SB editor (e.g. you just want printouts)
and you have your DIRECT set selected from your HDD, just copy that SET onto a USB and put it in the PC etc.
No need to de-assign/re-assign.
The selected DIRECT set is still on your HDD, selected and unchanged - so all is good.

Hope this helps (we'll get there :D )

Hi Pete

Thanks to you, we got the job done. The problem was that the file I needed was hiding in plain sight. All I needed to do was to choose the Direct Set as it was, instead of tearing it all apart looking for .set file. Once you came and told me the pc doesn't show it that way,-SHAZAAM!

Thanks to all others, also, that make up this most helpful forum.
