Korg PA700 midi application

Post by Dawnbell »

My PA700 is connected to TC Helicon Perform VK (a harmonizer) via 5-pin midi cable. I am exploring the possibility of controlling VK from PA700 since both have midi capability. For instance, set a key on PA700 to turn the harmony on and off, etc. Does anyone else do this, or similar application?

I actually used the tc Helicon Harmony-M modules when I was gigging with other singers. I actually had three Harmony-M modules so I could get thick harmonies from each singer when I needed to.

What I did was wire a foot pedal that featured 3 plugs so I could turn them all off/on at will. I also changed the MIDI channel so that the harmony boxes would receive their chord information from the arranger chord portion of the arranger (I was using a Roland E-09 at the time). That way, the harmonies would always follow the chords in the arranger, versus what I was actually playing with my right hand.

I believe that you can do the same with the PA series. In the MIDI implementation, it should list which channel sends the chord information in the arranger and you are good. Since the chord implementation on the PA700 is even better than that on my Roland E-09, it might be easier.

I no longer have those harmony boxes, as I sold them about 5 years ago. I am looking to possibly get another unit, but will have to find something newer, as the Harmony-M is no longer made nor is it available used anywhere I have looked.

Grace,
Harry

On PA700 user manual, MIDI session, page#870, it says "As a hint for those who program songs on computer: ........controls for an harmonizer on channel 5". I wonder if a detailed explanation and application of this statement can unlock a whole lot potential of the keyboard 8)

VH-controls on ch5

In contex "Connecting MIDI devices" you will find:
As a hint for those who program songs on computer: even though it is not mandatory, FOR A WIDERE COMPATIBILITY you should set bass on channel 2, melody on channel 4, drum kit on channel 10, controls for an harmonizer on channel 5.

This only means that many users like to work with channel 5 for the control of the harmonizer and therefore maybe you first look for midi events on Ch5 of an SMF, if you want to know if there are VH-control information (notes, chords).

Maybe you configure an external Midi-Device to send VH-Controls with Ch5 to same preselected channels of all other devices that are working with vh-controls.

Or maybe you want to use LeftHand of your Pa700 set Midi-Out of channel 5 to LOWER and - if you do not want to use Lower for internal Sounds - set Internal/External of Lower to "External" (StylePlayTrackControls). So you get Midi-Messages of Lower to your external device (Perform VK), that should be set to Midi-In channel 5 to receive VH-control informations.
kind regards
