Korg M1 Connecting to Laptop

Hi all, thanks for help with this. I have a Korg M1, it's been in storage since I moved and in that time the internal battery has died. I know how to replace this but as you will all know once the battery dies the sound revert to a piano sound and everything is lost. I want to take this opportunity to connect the M1 to my laptop and wondered how I did this. I have seen everything from sound interfaces to just using midi to usb cables. It all gets rather confusing, so any help it more than welcome.
