Pa700 un-tuned sounds in Korg Sounds and Style!!!

Post by sarmad_kotra »

I had the Pa700 OR for two months now and I have noticed that some of the sounds are not tuned well together including the Piano sound; is it just me or has anyone else noticed that? Please see the videos in the links below:

A very interesting and well presented demonstration. I found the factory pianos on my Pa3x to be much the same and I think it is because Korg is a big believer in using stretched tuning. See this Wikipedia article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stretched_tuning

The problem is that digital sound sources react differently because the harmonics are not really interacting the same way as in a real instrument.
I don't know whether Korg might be able to address this in an update but in the meantime you can load a whole new set of pianos (116mb compressed equivalent to 232mb) from the link in the Pa3x discussion below:

Dear Reuben, Thank you so much for your kind reply and interest; I had pa600 and pa900 in the few previous years and they had some kind of tuning shifting but not as extreme as the pa700; I understand the concept of stretched tuning because I occasionally tune my own (two Yamaha pianos) but it does not go that far (-19 cent) to some of the notes; these is an obvious problem in the whole sound system in the 700; actually I realized later that third of the new sounds are shifted in a horribly funny way including guitars sounds which are part of the styles which make it sound ridiculously horrible.

Thank you so much for sending the link of the piano/s. I happened to download this exact piano a month ago and it sounds great really; however the way it is structured uses some of the factory sounds of the keyboard itself (the resonance sounds/pcms) when you press the sustain pedal and these are shifted (un-tuned) exactly the same way as the other main PCMs of the piano which again causes two different tuned notes played at the same time which ruin the C5 beautiful tones; I went in and disabled these and now something is missing while pressing the sustain, Anyway, filling my precious very limited memory with one sound that is suppose to be the available default for any keyboard is not a practical thing to do because I need this memory for many other User styles and sounds. Korg must fix this because it is very wired that a $1400 2017 keyboard still sounds so poorly and even un-tuned. Totally disappointing. I dont mind using these poor plastic 2013 (pa600) piano pcm sample but at least tune it right.

Again Thank you for your interest and support and the productive conversation.

I am not sure how many spare oscillators you have available on the Pa700 for the factory pianos but if you were to free up some by not using say pedal and key-off effects you could probably divide the keyboard into 3 or 4 key-range zones and re-tune the various blocks of notes accordingly.
(I've sent you a PM re re-tuning the resonances on my piano and will release an update shortly).

Dear Reuben, this is actually an excellent idea that I never thought of; although it needs a lot of planning and time and structuring but it could actually work; smart idea.
At the same time I hope that me and other voice could put some pressure on Korg to improve that piano sound and not having to sacrifice our ram for a decent piano sound. Can I have your email please?

Thank you,

Dear duby2, Really you think that the pa4x and the pa1000 have the same piano problem that I have in the 700? That is sad really :(

I do not know it this is a problem most people can not hear if it in or out of tune and sometime the notes go by so fast you can tell ,,I can live with it ,,
but I did put my tuner and my phone tuner ,to see ,, and both said the key board are out some,, I also check my yamaha keyboare p115 , and it was in tune,,,just like a real band everyone is out of tune ... LOL :D

Hi guys

Page 830 in the manual shows the options to select "stretched tuning" and hence describes exactly what is in the video.

Simulates the ‘stretched’ tuning of an acoustic piano. Basically an equal
tuning, the lowest notes are slightly lower, while the highest notes are
slightly higher than the standard.
Are we sure the tuning was actually set to "equal" in that video????

Cheers

Pete :D

Edit: If everyone experiences this - is it possible that the PA700 ships with that setting?

That was exactly my first thought: 'Can it be solved by choosing the correct scale?'
If so it'd be much easier than loading odd tuned samples...(although they might be very good😉)

Yes the set is compatible with the PA4X/3x/1000/700.
I have removed the old link so you get the latest version.

Hi Reuben, hope i will not bother you too much but being a newbie to Korg and only home player, still finding my way around. I downloaded to a usb and put the eight into user. when I select First piano it shows in right one but I only hear the previous instrument. Am I saving wrong or in the wrong place. Dave

I'm not sure what you are doing. Make sure you Load (not Save) and not sure what you mean by "put Eight into User". You need to Load the whole .Set folder to begin with then decide if you want to continue to Load the whole 16 or drill down into User as described in detail in the Pa3x discussion link.
