KORG KRONOS sudden reboot when USB devices are connected

Post by krslae »

I have an original KRONOS 88 (which I got in 2013). I have never had problems like this before, but at rehearsal yesterday the system suddenly started crashing over and over again. The crash was usually followed by another "crash" during boot with the following message:

"SYSTEM STARTUP FAILED. Please disconnect any USB devices and restart."

Which I did, and then it booted properly. This happened more than once, but only when my iPhone or my Samsung tablet was connected via USB (using it to charge the devices, tablet for sheet music and iPhone for hotspot). I even had graphical glitches when browsing the user banks right before crash and reboot, it looked like the OS just froze and restarted. Am at rehearsal today as well and I have no issues so long as I don't connect any USB devices. Has anyone had similar issues? Anyone knows how to fix this?

I should also add that I've been using the USB ports like this for years without ever having issues. It all started yesterday.

Version: KRONOS 3.0.3
Memory: 2GB

Thanks!

I believe Kronos is reliant on a steady stream of power/current.

Get a UPS if you are not already doing so. That would be step 1 in troubleshooting, IMO

We have never had issues with unstable power supply at the place where we are rehearsing (on the contrary it's superb compared to other places that I know of). I am also using other sensitive equipment which had no issues, so I don't think that should be the problem.

But thanks anyway!

After that last reply I thought I'd check to be sure, just so that I'm not jumping to conclusions here. It turns out that this is a "malfunction" that I can provoke by connecting USB devices (Samsung tablet and/or iPhone 6s) to the instrument.

I tested this at home this time.

Hi, In that case, is it a current draw problem on the ports? If you put a powered USB hub in the way, does the problem go away. And has something changed lately in your tablet/phone combination?

For years I used a Focusrite Saffire on my laptop straight from the USB port with no problems (well, so long as it was in the USB 2 port, not USB 3). I recently upgraded to a Focusrite 2i4 which solved the USB 3 compatibility issue, but I cannot run that USB device straight from the laptop due to the fact that it draws more current. I had to put a little powered hub in the way for it to work.

That's interesting. I think I have a powered hub somewhere, so I'll test this when I get home.

I've had my Kronos halt booting when I plug in a USB device during boot time. Post-boot plug-in of USB devices has never caused a problem for me. Pre-boot plug-in neither for that matter.

You should also update your system. The last version 3.1.2.
Every new update contains minor and major bug fixes as new features.
