Karma Scenes are Amazing!

Post by Phinnin »

So I'm basically 5 years into my journey with this board (Ser#220 original k61) and yet I still learn amazingly powerful things on an almost daily basis!

I just learned how I can use Karma to allow me to add/remove layers to a combi on the fly. This way, I can switch from sound to sound without having to take additional setlist slots (I use 60+ in my main cover band with 1 slot/song).

This will likely allow me to eliminate a second board as I can flip a switch to garner additional keyboard "real estate".

Karma, not for arpeggiation anymore!

Don't want to bum you out but you don't need Karma to do this - not for a long time.
That's what the "live" mute setting is for.

I use this feature every night - last night too!

Aron: Are you talking about Timbre muting? My issue with that has been it requires at least two (and sometimes many more) clicks to mute/unmute timbres. Where the Karma Scene option allows you make multiple changes with a single button push.

If there another slick method, I'd love to learn in.

Kenrdot: I learned the process from this video. Might make things easier for you to figure out. Pretty cool!

If you like that, you might like the follow up I made to it. Here they both are:

No problem. I actually learned of the concept from a post on Karma-lab. I can't remember where, though! I'm glad people are finding this useful. "Scoopicman" is my name on most websites.

Interesting. I thought there was a problem with using Karma - with volume sliders etc...

What I do is setup a combination with 8 sounds. I then layer at will - simply by muting or unmuting. I use the volume sliders to fade in out sounds.
Is there an easier method?

Aron: I'm not sure about sliders as I use them the way you do (although I often assign a timbre's volume to my expression pedal to make the fade in easier to do live).

My issue was more about playing a song where for parts of the song I have say, just a solo organ, but during a chorus, I want to bring in 3-4 extra layers. I the past I have had to rely on a split (different section of keyboard or another KB altogether) to have those extra layers. I thought about using setlist mode to move through sections but this would become super cumbersome as some songs might have 5 or more changes.

So karma scenes work great as I can make a scene for the solo organ, another scene for the solo piano and yet another with the organ, a couple layers of synth, etc. And I won't even have to change my hand position, I just toggle from scene to scene.

Super slick!

OK very cool! In general, I turn Karma off because if you have it on - doesn't it start playing all sorts of things inadvertently? Need to check this out.

Yeah, just uncheck the "run" box and it won't go crazy on you. You can use it as a super powerful routing tool.

Another trick is you can use Karma to allow your expression pedal on the Kronos control the volume on an external MIDI KB. really nice when you want to use one pedal to control multiple boards.

Thanks! I used to use Karma to turn the layers on/off to save polyphony but stopped afterwards. Will check it out. Thank you!

Definitely looks like something to check out, thanks for the head's up and video. I could definitely use a 1 button click to change up the layers on a combi. The Kronos and this forum just keep getting better all the time.

I've been using Karma scene buttons for advanced SST since the M3. So much easier using Karma buttons rather tan touch screen, plus you can change up to four program/comb is without cutoff. Using SST you can only switch twice before cutoff of sound.
