Korg Volcas MIDI keyboard controllers

Post by Steinberger »

Friend of mine is looking for a small form factor keyboard controller for his Volcas. After browsing the intertubes today I came up with the following list of considerations keeping in mind the Volca needs MIDI Din controller and (if wanting to control more than one Volca) MIDI solutions Quadra Thru box. Some have drum pads and CC controls, some don't.

Arturia Keylab 25 (his first choice)
Alesis Q25 (keys only)
CME XKey (keys only. has MIDI Din adapter?)
Akai Max25 (MIDI & CV)
Korg Taktile 25 (easy MIDI ch change using scenes)

I'm assuming these provide quick MIDI channel changes from the controller without using a PC. I know on my Taktile 49 I can set up scenes, 1 for each channel, and assign the drum pads to control a drum machine or synth on a different channel. The Alesis is really quick as well with holding a function key and then the corresponding keyboard key for the appropriate MIDI channel.

What do you think?

i have a Korg K25 which i got cheap on ebay and use it connected to my volca bass.

i also have an alesis photon x25 which i purchased years ago and never really got started making music with it because it was cumbersome to set up as a virtual instrument.
it does have a built in sound card so i can use it for send FX routing to laptop and back to my mixer.
it also has MIDI in/out and i am trying to get it set up with my volca sample- i have 10 nobs to use for the clear dials and the axyz infrared pseudo-theremin for the cutoff. what i want to know is what other MIDI parameters i can utilize to control the volca sample, because i have 10 more programmable buttons i could assign...
