ES2 & iPad over USB

I tried connecting the ES2 to an iPad over USB using the following cable but i had no midi messages received on the iPad. Does the iPad only work with the camera connection lighting adaptor?

ps1. Same connection to a mac worked so it's not an issue of the ES2.
ps2. I have the iconnect midi+2 box and works just fine but i'm trying to cut down on cabling.

iPad needs camera connection kit to receive midi...

my iPad Air2 cannot accept the classic camera conection kit, instead it can take this, is it the same?

Yes. Get the USB 3 version though so you can charge the iPad simultaneously
