THE PERFECT TEAM...

...to charge you out the ass! That's about $2000 street! That might be reasonable if they packed an LCD projector in there or something. As it is, so what? Other than having a lot of sampling space it looks ludicrously overpriced for anything it could possibly offer.

I heard about 1500....I'll wait to pass judgement until there are more details. Could be great, or could be an overpriced DJ toy.....

In my opinion it does not compete with es2. I would say assuming the price range we should compare it with same price machines like octatrack. At the moment we know that it has actual pads, 16 track sequencer and analog filters (per part or master?) that is some improvement compare to octa, large lcd is questionable since we don't know what actually it does. That's it. Not much known concerning step sequencer resolutions, amount of bars, built in effects etc. At the moment I don't see anything that would explain why the price is so high, except that it is pioneer and it contains fancy dsi filters (bwt hp does not even have a resonance). If somebody wants to buy fancy dsi filters, well they sell rack versions.

In comparing this to the ES2, here is what I am not seeing:

8 bars. It looks like it can only do 4, like the ES2

Scales and Key selection. ES2 is a sampling keyboard with scale and key/note control, an gate-arp patterns and velocity groove patterns.

For now, thats what sets the ES2 apart from the competition. And then there is the price point. For half the cost of the Toraiz SP-16 Pro Sampler you can have both the ES2 and the E2 ot the ES2 and the Circuit.

Right the Toraiz SP-16 Pro Sampler seems to be a great portable clip launcher, with no need for the laptop, which is great! The price on the other hand is a bit steep. The name David Smith makes things pricey.

So if anyone can figure out how many bars this Topaz has and if it plays notes/treats samples as Oscillators, I would love to revise my comment.

that sampler looks like a standalone machine controller without the software, combine with some aspects of the touch.

but the price puts is outside the electribe weight class

only sub £500 quid samplers can be considered in a similar range as the electribe.

I dont see this dave smith getting much traction due to its price it seems more of a limited run/boutique type instrument.

much like the roger linn instruments;

one can clearly see "slice" and "scale" buttons. and if the screenshot is any indication one can see the "BARS" Display has 3 digits.....good signs IMO, but actual details still scant.

they clearly burrowed from maschine with the multi colored pads as did push.

however that just makes the unit look toyish despite the build looking relatively solid; these companies need to realize that although functional the fully illuminated pads look toyish; better to have multi colored edges a la MPC.

also they heavily stole from the mpc touch notice the pads on the left and what is presumably a touch screen on the right.

then they stole from ableton push with the touch strip with a lighted edge.

fair enough if its good and they make a success out of it, u can see how they just sat in the lab with a mpc touch, a maschine and push 2 then said lets just combine all three and make it stand alone to cash in.

Price Matter

US$400 vs US$1500 .... Please dont kill the S2, every time new samplers come out to the market (or rummors).

Long live to S2!

I love that it has analog filters. I've been wanting that for a long time. But $1400... AND on top of it those rainbow colors. I wish this trend would end. Fortunately with the ES2 some tape placed underneath easily gets rid of some of the bling bling. Will this device have the equivalent of motion sequencing? That's an important consideration.

The colours don't look that bad. I think they'd be useful if playing live in poor lighting conditions. Better than having clip on desk lights above your gear to see what you're doing (which I've had to do before).
The ES2 is no dark i have to squint at it in good light.
