Using M3 keyboard with my Kronos

Post by Fopperr.M3 »

Because the keybed of the M3 is the best ever made and I am missing it a lot, I was wondering if the keyboard can be used without the M3 of Radias module and connect it like any other midi controller.

The connector looks like the "to host" that is also used on the Korg 05rw but has 9 pins instead of 8 pins.

Also the question korg uses unique protocol or is it easy to solder a midi connector instead of the 9-pin (Brainfart...).

Maybe there is someone who tried this before?

Thnks for reading👍

It seems a waste of good hardware! How about connecting the M3 module's MIDI out port to the Kronos' MIDI in. Better still, daisy-chain the Radias module in there for good measure. Use the Radias' MIDI thru to send MIDI to the Kronos MIDI in. Route the audio outputs of all of them into a mixer and get the best of all worlds. Just make sure the M3 is set to output on MIDI channel 1.

Example wiring: M3 MIDI out <--> Radias MIDI in; Radias MIDI Thru <--> Kronos MIDI in

where "<-->" is standard MIDI cable

The Kronos keyboard will still be active, so can be used for playing the Kronos sounds without triggering the M3 or Radias.

Well, thnks for the info but I found out how to connect a synth or keyboard by a midi cable about 15 years ago but thanks for the refreshment of my brain 😜

I don't have an M3 keybed also don't have the module. Want to use the m3's keyboard for a project as a midi controller.

I think it was just assumed that if you had the keybed you probably had one of the modules as well. So you were taking an easy job and making it difficult.

But if you don't have the modules, I would recommend just emailing Korg support and asking for a pin-out diagram of the M3 keybed.

Seems like I've seen other midi devices use that same connector, so it might not be as proprietary as one might think.

No it's not standard MIDI, as you need to power the keybed through this connector also. From the M3 service manual (you can find a scanned copy by searching on Google), the pinout of the 9 pin miniDIN is:
1: Analog GND (AGND)
2: +5V
3: SCAN TXD
4: GND
5: SCAN RXD
6: DETECT (1K to GND)
7: -12V
8: +12V
9: RESET

On the second connector on the 73 keyboard, only pins 1 thru 4 are used.

Not clear from the schematic if the SCAN TXD / RXD are MIDI format. They come straight out of the (5V) microcontroller with 100 Ohms series on TXD.

m388 or m373 keybed is not midi last class i had

m388 or m373 keybed is not stand alone midi last korg class I had.
but if you have a radias or m3m unit they have the midi io jacks built in to them and then use the small din to the korg module.

you are better off selling the korg keybed (last one I bought was 450.00)
and buying a good controller keybed.
several good 88 key beds for 199.00 up to 900.00.
I like the a88 roland for a stand alone unit... 900.00...
or pick up a radias module for 600.00...
