PA500 ORT

Post by Paya »

Hi all,

After two years of being interested in buying a Korg I finally bought a korg PA500 Oriental. Very pleased with so far however..I have been reading on the forum and read that you cannot load any new styles/sounds etc onto the pa500, because it doesn't have a sampler.

The previous owner has put different styles and sounds into the arranger and they can be seen in the "user" tabs. I asked him if he did this himself and he said yes. He downloaded some samples and then he had to remake this on the arranger itself. Now I don't know exactly how this is done, but my primary reason for buying a korg is to be able to play with some of my friends. The issue is that I want to be able to have the same sets as them. They own a pa800.

I know you are unable to load any sets from a pa800, but I heard that you can convert them. Is this true.

Also, I have seen pa500 arrangers on YouTube playing the sets that I want to have so I am wondering how they have been able to load these sets if others are saying that you are not able to load any sets other than the factory ones.

Many thanks!

Yes you can NOT load actual samples in PA500. You can however create user sounds off of factory sounds and save those under user sound banks. Again, these are not foreign loaded samples but just stock sounds that have been modified.

Sam- if lets say someone created sounds off of factory sounds on a pa500, would they not be able to save this on the sd card and give to someone else to load onto their pa500? If no, then why would we even need a sd card?

Yes you can load customized sets for pa500. You just can't load samples... There are plenty of sets for your keyboard on the Internet. You can also make your own styles and sounds on pa500. You can even load pa800/pa2x styles and sounds that do not use samples. Search the net you'll find a lot of stuff. :)

Like I said you can create and save sounds that are based on factory sounds. Then, you can save the whole thing as a SET. Someone else will be able to load that SET on their keyboard as well. So you can save and load SETs as long as they don't use external samples.

I don't know if you could transfer SETs between the standard and oriental models though. I've never owned any of those oriental versions.

ProudM3 - thank you for confirming. Since I am still new with the Korg, I thought sets would be samples as well. Would you mind telling me the difference? Would e.g. Loops be a sound, or a sample?

My friend has downloaded and ripped some songs from YouTube videos and used them as loops. Would I be able to do the same or could I use his created loops from his pa800?

OK. The loops (as you call them :)) are samples and you can't load them in pa500 since it doesn't have a sampler. You cannot load those that your friend created because he used samples(loops). The pa500 has its own sounds and you can tweak them and make them sound the way you want them to sound and then save them to a user bank. You can save that userbank to an SD card and others can load those sounds in their pa500. Also, for example I own a pa800 or a pa2x and if I make a sound that I like using the factory sounds in my pa800/pa2x, you can load them in your pa500. But if I use samples(loops) in making those sounds, you cannot load them. Actually you will be able to load them but there will be no sound.

Now that's a great explanation for a newbie like me! :) that clears things up for me. Thank you very much!!

One last question; if I loaded some sets onto the keyboard, does it have a chance of getting blocked if its a wrong set?

Well, if you have a SET and you're not sure that it's a PA500 SET, then you should only load the STYLE and SOUNDS folder, DO NOT load the GLOBAL folder ...or DO NOT load the whole SET if you are unsure. And make sure you do a FULL RESOURCE BACKUP before you load anything :)

Best of luck :)

You sure don't make me end up saying "thank you" and leaving me without any further questions haha.

Is there any guidance on how to load styles and sounds? I have looked on youtube, but most of the vids that relate to it seem to be in Arabic, which I unfortunately cannot understand.
If it is within the manual then i will have a look later on this evening.

A full resource backup can be done in what way?
Again, if it is within the manual then i will look this up!

I appreciate your help!

*edit* I have made a backup of the original sets and loaded another set. Yippy! :) now I know what the styles and sounds are like when they are loaded from a different korg.

Thank you all for the help!
