Used Kronos With Bass Pedals in Church

Post by Fatherofone »

I bought a set of Studiologic MP-117s and paired them with my Kronos x 61 via my Behgringer k3000fx and used that in the service today as my Hammond. It was screaming, the bottom end was a little light, something I plan to fix with a subwoofer. But, it definitely does the job and I got tons of compliments and curious looks from people wondering where the Hammond was...LOL. There are a few logistics to work out with having switches immediately available when you want or need them. But that can certainly be worked through. I've been playing Hammonds for over 25 years in urban churches and the capability in the Kronos to get that sound just blows my mind.

Nice! If you get a chance to post photos and especially video, we'd love to see them.

Cool, congrats!
As for switches, you can use Tone Adjust to set up various parameters on 16 switches, as well as eight knobs above them. Also the joystick/switches/ribbon area, the vector joystick and footswitches can be used. If you need to switch sounds like you might using the preset keys on a real Hammond, I would suggest putting your various sounds in a setlist and switching through them that way. Good luck!

Thanks. I've already made some adjustments in not only switches but the programs behind the combi(s) as well to deal with several of this issues. Such as removing splits and changing the rotary switch. That was an issue as joystick up activated the rotary and down the split. If you move it the wrong way you don't get what you wanted. It was too easy to make a mistake. I changed one or two other things as well.

One issue I am still trying to find a solution for is the expression pedal doesn't control the volume on the foot pedals because they are on a different midi channel (3 versus 1). I'm not sure why that is or how to fix it yet. You would think it would act just like any other pedal and unless you tell the system to filter it out it would control the same effect on the other midi channel. Any ideas would be appreciated.

One thing that you might want to try is using a damper pedal to control your leslie speeds. It's easy to set up and you can just as easily set it so that it doesn't act as a piano damper pedal for your organ sounds. That way you're not having to take your hands off of the keyboard to change Leslie speeds.
Myself, I've always prefered a footswitch over the old hand switch.
If music is the food of love, play on and play loud!
Gear: Kronos 73, Wavestation EX, Polysix, King Korg, Monotron and Monotron Duo, Minikorg, Moog Grandmother, my very old MiniKorg, 4 acoustic and 9 electric guitars, 1 Ibanez 5 string bass, a Steel guitar, a bunch of microphones, 2 pairs of studio monitors and other very cool toys, 1 wife and 4 cats and a lava lamp!

I'm really not the guy to give tips on using KARMA but I believe you can use this to "copy" the expression info to another channel, using timbre through and then filtering out the notes and stuff.
Alternatively, and probably the easiest solution if it is an option for you, you could set the expression pedal globally to "master volume" to control all timbre volumes at once (assuming you're not using drumtracks or other backing parts).

Interesting you should ask that. I bought that over the weekend and used it for the first time yesterday. It's an EV ZLX15p and it really is awesome. It takes the Kronos to it's intended level. I read a complaint somewhere about how the Kronos pianos just don't sound good with the Behringer k3000fx. I agreed with that assessment as well and could never get it EQ'd to my satisfaction with the Behringer. But with the EV, it's a whole different story. Pianos, organs etc are crisp and the EV has lots of clear bottom as well! I also ran it in stereo with the Behringer just to see what it would sound like, I thought I had died and gone to heaven.
