Radias Display LCD Screen Issues

Post by Darioe »

Hi everybody i read somebody else already posted something similar but nobody really gave any other options than send the radias back to repair.

Having a problem with the display, after playing for a while it occasionally stops working...some of the text lines first remain blocked when turning pages then some of them starts to become all white...in 5 sec the display is showing strange stuff and i cannot use it anymore... Turning the power off for a while then everything is ok...what to do? I'm frightened if this could happen when playing live! And i am going to have a show in 2 weeks

Please help...

Mmh, different things may be causing this:
* Warming up of the display, causing some mechanical stress, making the display does not properly show the screens anymore after a while.
* The software responsible for LCD in the Radias crashes for some reason. But I would expect that it also affects other controls then. Factory reset or SW upgrade may fix this.
* ...

The fact that you have to wait a while (how long?) after power down, points in the warming up hypothesis. But nothing is sure.
So sending back for repair is still the best option I think.

OpAmp thank you for your suggestions. Yes I bet it is related to some kind of overheating because the problem only comes up after playing for a while and especially when handling more with display stuff.
It is only a display problem because everything else works perfectly, it is just I can't see the program I am using etc...
Usually 10 min of power off are enough to make everything working fine again.
I would send it to repeair only as last option because they said 1-2 months could pass by for the operation... :(

Solved

Post by Darioe »

I've finally solved the problem by myself! :D
Here I share what I've done maybe it could be useful to someone else!

So the RADIAS display is a matrix display controlled through a ribbon cable with 16 pins. When you open your radias it is easy to find (it's a cable nearby the screen with the starting and the ending pins perpendicular one to the other). The characteristics of the ribbon cable are:
AWM 2896 80 C VW-1. I think the name of the producer is Sumitomo.
A quick search on google shows what I am talking about.

The 16 pins control separately a part of the screen, let's say a certain number of characters.

So basically the problem was related to an overheating of this ribbon cable, caused by a contact with some capacitors which were getting warm after a while. The structure and functioning of the cable explain why only some parts of the screen were not refreshing (probably only a part of the cable was in contact with those capacitors).
The solution? Simply and without any cost :P
I removed the ribbon cable then placed it again exchanging the head with the end and changing the initial shape by bending it in a new way so that it doesn't touch the capacitors anymore.

Hope it will help ;)

Hi,

Good that you figured it out and it is working fine now.
Still, I don't want to spoil it, but... Is it normal that those caps heat up?
