Audio Interface For Recording Kronos
If i purchased a decent audio interface would i notice a large difference in sound quality when recording into Cubase?
So far i'm using just a USB cable and it sounds pretty lifeless compared to how it sounds on the Kronos.

Connecting Kronos to your computer with USB is fine. You haven't mentioned how you are monitoring Kronos? If you are using your computer speakers or something else in that category, well then by all means an audio interface and a set of studio monitors will surely brighten your day. Get ready for a whole new experience!

I use my Zoom H1 to record the Kronos output, too. I also use the H1 as a USB mic... Small wonder H1..Billy McBride wrote:I am not sure about recording into a DAW, but I record using a Zoom H1 recorder which can record both wav and MP3s. If there is a better way to record, without using a DAW, I am not sure, but I have had more pleasure coming from recording from the ZOOM H1 than any other recorder I have owned.

Using USB is the cleanest possible method to get sound inside your computer. If it sounds "dull and lifeless", the only possibilities are you are doing something with it in your software, or your monitoring is different from when you're actually playing the Kronos. Meaning the output of your soundcard or your speakers are doing it.kingy10kingy wrote:hi,
do you notice a difference in quality while using the audio interface as opposed to just connecting it via usb to computer?
So only in a very specific situation would a soundcard improve the quality you're getting right now and it would be easy to test.

indeed, the monitor possibility, or maybe an user error that you are recording on a mono audio channel in cubase? that would make a big difference.
Normally you create a new stereo audio pair in the Connection window in cubase and select that one for a stereo audio lane.
So, could it be that you are recording in mono?

Not likely, when comparing sound you should use the same speaker setup otherwise it can't be compared.kingy10kingy wrote:Not recording in Mono , only in stereo.
I use foxtex satalite speakers for my Kronos , and PC speakers for my computer. The average user will only have PC speakers that's why I want to use these instead but they never sound crystal clear.
Would an audio interface benefit me ?
When you record the sound through USB then the sound is digitally recorded over the USB channel, the audo interface has nothing to do with this.
I didn't know that it was possible to use the USB as a kronos audio in for the PC. I thought that that was only possible for Apple Mac. I know that you can stream the pc audio through the kronos over usb, but vica versa is new for me. Since there is no asio driver available for the kronos on a pc it sounds to me that it's hard to work with, don't you have way to much latency to make it usable?

I use Asio4All (v2) and that works fine with my Windows 8 PC in combination with Cubase 5.

if your Kronos and your PC are in the same room, you should get yourself a small mixer and run both your PC and the Kronos through the same Fostex monitors. The PC speakers are likely your problem - most are horribly inaccurate, emphasize low mids and and have no proper top-end to speak of. If you don't want to purchase a separate audio interface for your PC, you can run a 3.5mm -> dual 1/4" cable into that little mixer to get a stereo feed.
