O.K., I faced my fears, tried it, and got the same error everyone was reporting, so I (Not fully understanding what a Driver was 'I know, I am an idiot) downloaded the Driver to my wife's laptop, and BAM! It worked seamlessly! I thought the Driver was supposed to get installed on my Kronos! If that tells you how un-knowledgeable I am with computers! And I swear, I have been sequencing since 1989!

Thanks everyone for your help.

Umm do you really mean driver? The Driver is what lets your computer connect to your Kronos over USB.
So, what it seems you did was installed that on your wife's computer. Unless you are going to use that computer with your Kronos all you have done is added something to her system she doesn't need.

You needed the latest USB driver for the firmware to communicate and be installed on the PC.
So by downloading the latest Korg usb driver on the laptop it allowed the laptop to communicate properly with the Kronos and do the firmware transfer to it.
So you did the right thing, all is good. If you want you can uninstall the korg USB driver from your wifes laptop if you are never going to connect it to the Kronos again. It won't hurt your wife's PC at all. If you want to use the Kronos editor or connect your DAW on the PC with the Kronos on that PC then leave it there or it won't communicate. Hope that explains a bit to you.
Think of a drivers as something that "drives" a device. Your car is no good without a driver. It sits there and goes nowhere so is useless. A usb driver allows the usb to work and communicate between the PC and the Kronos.

You might think about why Korg wants you to update the OS and Firmware. Here is some organ sounds too boot? I would say if its not broke don't try to fix it. There may be a hole or hacking option they are closing up.. This Kronos is a PC you know. Whats to stop us from putting in a 500gb ssd with all the sounds? :)

This IS crossing my mind. I want to know what "Benefits" there are to the new firmware. Currently I use the internal Ethernet port with a wireless WiFi adapter. I would be pretty upset if that port got closed and it stopped working!

I think it's clearly stated what the benefits are. If you hacked your Kronos beyond anything supported by Korg that's your perogative. I don't think Korg has any obligation to explain they "shut off" the ethernet port if they never supported its use in the first place. It would only confuse people.

It's not about "hacking", it's about not losing functionality that should have been there in the first place. Being forced to do ethernet over USB is plain DUMB. Yeah, it makes it easy for basic users as an OPTION (And that's cool), but for those of us more capable it's nice to be able to do it the RIGHT way.

As far as "Hacking": Yes, some of us would like to fully exploit the hardware once the time comes the Kronos is no longer supported. There's nothing wrong with that. Honestly, I REALLY wish there was an API released for 3rd party devs for the Kronos so it could be even more extensible, but this is veering off into a completely different conversation not appropriate here.

Sounds like you're one who enjoys Apple products ;) They "Work", but the training wheels never come off!
