How to deal with DAW latency

Post by Valles »

Hi

I would like to know how you guys hook your Kronos to your DAW. I am ok setting up and record midi. The trouble starts when I print audio there is that gap between the beginning of the region and where the waveform starts. (Latency)
I would love to use my Kronos sounds instead software instruments. Please let me know.

Many thanks

if you are on a pc then select the asio driver from your soundcard and set the buffer size to 256 or 512, these are acceptable latency times for working in daws without losing to much cpu power.

Then in ableton live follow the guide (it's in the menu) to determine the hardware latency of your synth, so let's say that you want to connect the kronos to an ableton live device, then select an external instrument and connect that to the audio inputs of the kronos. After that, it should run reasonable in sync, the finetuning is done by adding 4 notes with a sound with a short attack and decay. Record that 4 notes in audio and determine the amount of delay between the marker and the start of your audio. (that's the delay of your hardware and not the latency of your audio card which you have fixed earlier with the test). Now fill that delay value in the delay box of your external instrument and save that as a kronos instrument.

Now whenever you need to use the kronos just select your kronos external instrument that you just have created and everything will be perfectly in sync.

All Qui's steps are the same for Mac except for the very first one "select ASIO", just skip this as there is no need on Mac.

Yes, Core Audio is all you need on OS X.

Problem solved in Live (I think it will work also in Pro Tools)
Thanks again to every one that lead me in the right direction. This is a great forum!

Qui, since you use Live too, do you know also how record/edit automation inside the arrangement window? Let's say I have my combi on my Kronos and 16 channels in Ableton and I want to write automation in Live of one of the tracks. Can I do that too?

Many thanks in advance.

yes, that's easy to do when you use max4live (you need to have Live Suite for that), if you don't have it then you have to use the Standard CC controls.

i've posted a lot of info in the following two threads:
http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=83948

http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... hp?t=84302

but basically it's done by setting it up like the image i posted in the first thread above here:
(you only need step 4 till 6) the first three steps are for using KARMA on VST instruments

Qui, thanks again for this.

Since the parameters for each program (assigned to the rotary knobs in the Kronos) are different from program to program, is there a list with all the tone adjust CC's ?
