MOXF

Post by Jan1 »

It looks like the Krome has competition from Yamaha in the form of the MOXF.
Although I am not a fan of the Yamaha sound, the MOXF has a big advantage in the form of the Flash ROM expansion which allows you to load your own samples.
And for those who DO like the Yamaha sound the MOXF is of course a dream come true: basically a full Motif XF at half the price.

Other than that it's pretty obvious Yamaha is about to release a new flagship now that the MOXF has the same engine as the (more expensive) Motif XF.

Maybe time for KORG to release a Krome X with the sampler of the KRONOS (incl. sample streaming) added?

Yes, this looks like a great package. I will seriously consider this one, having missed my Motif ES ever since I sold it. But I wonder if the successor will be so awesome, I'll be tempted to buy that one instead! :-D

Very impressive little package for the price. From a quick look at the specs it seems to be lacking some of the features of the XF.
  • No sampling
    No memory included
    No after touch
    Less robust control surface
I'm also assuming the keybed action as well as the general build quality is not quite as good as the XF. Now I'm not complaining, this looks like a great deal considering it appears to have the full XF engine.

They may be getting ready for something. The MOX was released right around the same time as the XF. I think the XF came first. Maybe Kronos will have some competition but we will have to see. Kronos did build on the OASYS which had been around for a long time. Yamaha doesn't have any equivalent. I guess we will see what happens at winter NAMM.

I think Winter NAMM 2014 and Frankfurt 2014 are going to be very interesting.

Rumors are floating around about Roland working on a big release, which does not necessarily have to be a workstation, even though the latest Fantom dates back to 2008.
Next there's Yamaha who put their current flagship in a more affordable package, which is a strong indicator that they must have something waiting in the wings to replace the Motif XF.
And you never know what Kurzweil will come up with, not to mention KORG and many other companies.

Still love the ES and while I am missing the flash ROM and additional wave ROM of the XF, The advantage for me - if I wanted another Yamaha is that MOX8 will plummet in price thanks to the MOXF. The nice thing about Yamaha is that they haven't done much since the original Motif, so catch up is a bit easier.

But why no aftertouch? Roland made a mistake in not implementing in the Jupiter 50. I understand cost cutting, but, aftertouch is such an important component of expressiveness on a synth. Is it really THAT expensive to implement? Korg and Kurzweil include aftertouch on their mid range instruments, and, if I'm not mistaken, the Roland Junos (the later ones obviously) also included aftertouch.

Winter NAMM and Musikmesse WILL be very interesting. I am hoping that Kurzweil finally releases the long awaited true successor to the K series. Besides, I have four Rolands and that's enough love for them for now. :)

Best,
Vlad
Current gear: Kronos, Jupiter 80, Kurzweil PC3,Roland Fantom X8, Roland XV-88 (yep, its old, but the ACTION is heaven and those XV-3080 sounds are still wonderful for me), Radias-R, Motif ES (yeah it's older but I love the guitars ;) )

Prices here in The Netherlands are €989 for the MOXF6 and €1489 for the MOXF8.
That's a lot of goodies for a price which is below the Krome.

Gosh I feel so behind the times! I just read about the MOFX series today nearly 6 weeks after the announcement! I must be getting old.

I'm actually really excited about the 88 note version as I'm waiting for a more 'compact' and lightweight 88 note synth to come out with 128 notes of polyphony, not to mention the 8 insert fx slots like in the regular motifs.

This Yamaha would make an excellent companion to my Kurzweil PC361! I'd use the Kurz for the great hammond, orchestral sounds etc and the Yammi for the acoustic and electric guitars and basses, drums and acoustic pianos.

Looks like I need to give my studio a good hardware clear out and time to say goodbye to the fully expanded Ensoniq TS12, Generalmusic PRP800, Korg X5D and possibly even my Korg T3EX (my 1st synth that's still going strong but I think I might hold on to that one for sentimental reasons unless someone offers me 5K for it LOLOLOLOLOLOL:)

Oh of course, this is a Korg forum. I really love the Krome but some of the acoustic sounds like the guitars sound like they haven't left the 1990s! Anyway, it will be interesting what Korg, Roland and Yamaha have up their sleaves in 2014!!! :)
