I thought much of the point of the Solaris was emulation of classics.

Doesn't mean he succeeded, of course. I've never played one. Nor many of those classics, ha!

The Solaris has emulations of a number of classic oscillators and filters, but I don't think it was ever intended to be a straight "VA." It's the modular nature of the routing, and the ability to mix and match in a way that would never be possible in the analog domain, that is the real "point" (as far as I can tell).

Here, from the penultimate paragraph of the SoS review:

The only thing I would warn against is treating the Solaris as just a Minimoog/Prophet 5/Prophet VS/Microwave emulator. It’s capable of creating patches that are close in character and sound to each of these, but to limit your approach in this way would be to miss out on huge chunks of its capabilities. A few hours spent stepping through the factory patches demonstrates this clearly. The imitative sounds can be impressive, but it’s when the Solaris is used as a Solaris (if you see what I mean) that it shines.

Anyway, this discussion is going a bit OT (my fault!), since the KK and the Solaris are really not in the same category...

Fair enough, I just meant the guy's stated sales pitch is that the Solaris lets you combine "meticulously modeled" famous synth components in a modular fashion. He specifically mentions Moog oscillators, Prophet filters etc, in a way that even Korg doesn't.

But yeah, much more expensive. Also arguably closer to AL1 in form and function than KingKorg though.
