Use of DX7 and TX7 to select "best of" patches
I wouldn't sell my DX7 because you can use it to decide which patches to send to the Kronos. If you have a program like Midiquest, you can then make a library of favorite DX7 patches which you can convert to sysex format. Unfortunately you can't do the conversion to sysex format within Midiquest. But you have to send the bank back to the DX7 and then receive it on your PC as a sysex file using a utility such as "Bome's Sysex." (You can find the utility in the files section of the Yahoo Group "SySeX.")
I have a TX7 module which will accept patch dumps from my DX7II. I then dump to the sysex utility from the TX7. The sysex banks from my TX7 are recognized by the Kronos even though they are 9MB instead of 4MB. I think the Kronos grabs the first section which are the patches and then disregards the control data, etc. The problem with the DX7II sysex banks is that the control data comes first which the Kronos does not recognize.
I haven't tried to use the Kronos Editor yet. If it allows you to select, delete and shift patches around maybe all the above procedure is not needed.
BTW I recently upgraded my TX7's not backlit display to a bright blue LED display. I got the display and the instructions on Ebay for $25+ $5 shipping. I think he also sells the same display for the original DX7. No soldering is needed. You only need a screwdriver to install it.

I just played with this last night.
Most of the syx banks I tried loaded up no prob, DX7II and DX7S do not however. There were a couple other formats that didn't load, but those are the ones I remember.
Though once they loaded, tell you what! Brought me right back to High School playing on the school's DX synths with those horrible presets LOL. Now I have to find (or get to rather) some cooler banks.
I plan to make my own PCG of what I feel are "useful" and "FM Style" type sounds that really no other method will produce. Some sounds are just better suited with other engines, so it'd be a "Strengths of FM" type PCG.
If I ever get it done, I'll submit as an upload if anyone's interested.

I can see these DX7 patches will work on the Kronos, but will work on the M3?.....
Trying to look for the "classic" vintage synth sounds for my Korg M3 like the classic 80s sounds - Yamaha DX7, Roland D50, etc. I found a lot of great patches made for the Yamaha Motif XF but not much out there for the Korg M3.

Your best bet is a Motif-Rack XS to control from your M3.pianogrl697 wrote:I can see these DX7 patches will work on the Kronos, but will work on the M3?.....

For those who are interested in the DX patches, I just thought I'd let you know that we had a look at the collection at Sound Quest. The 200,000 patches in the collection actually reduce down to about 30,000 unique sounds.
Also, roughly 25% of the collection is actually not in a valid syx/MIDIX file format even though the files have a .syx extension. The Kronos is not able to load these files directly.
Finally, we have gone through the pain of finding and removing all of the duplicates as well as converting all of these patches from Yamaha's DX format into Kronos SysEx.

Is this something we will be able to get our hands on? I have been slowly going through this same painful process.SoundQuest wrote:For those who are interested in the DX patches, I just thought I'd let you know that we had a look at the collection at Sound Quest. It's my understanding that Kronos cannot load DX7II sounds. I don't know how different the structure of DX7 patches is versus DX7II.
The original DX7 is a 12 bit machine, thus the output is grungier with a lot of edge.
The DX7II was 16 bits while the original DX7 was indeed 12 bits. This may be why patches from the DX7II can't be loaded into Kronos, or my Oasys.

The 12 vs 16 is related to the DACs, not the structure of patches. Among other things, the DX7II was bitimbral so that could account for the differences in the patch/sysex files.hermanmusic wrote:It's my understanding that Kronos cannot load DX7II sounds.
