Monotron no longer makes sound.

Post by Bleep Bloop »

So I thought my monotron just had dead batteries and thats why it wouldnt turn on, but then I switched out the batteries and it still wouldnt turn on. you have to jiggle it a bit and then the red light activates on the rate knob and I can see that it is on. Even still after this the synth wont make noise. only a hum is emitted from the speakers/headphone jack.

any ideas as to why this might be?

thanks

Any number of things could have gone wrong with the circuitry, from minor to major... Depending on how old it is and how you bought it, you may just want to contact Korg -- some people have had great luck with that, others not so much -- or, better still, take it back to the retailer and have them contact Korg.

If that's not an option, hopefully you live somewhere that you can find someone who repairs synths (the Monotron is a piece of cake for an expert). Check Craigslist (leave a post if you have to) or ask around. Failing that, just find a qualified general electronics repair person -- while I *definitely* wouldn't recommend that for a really advanced synth, it's probably sufficient for the simple monotron if you make sure the repair person has the schematics: http://www.korg-datastorage.jp/Manual/monotron_sch.pdf

There's an excellent chance someone will open it, see a single broken connection, solder it back, and all will be well.

^ I second that. Thankfully monotrons are fully analogue (I've opened it and double checked, sure is), so fixing them is pretty straightforward.

You could start by checking the AMP section. I think hums are sometimes caused by bad capacitors.
