DIY Analogue Synths

Post by Yoa »

Hi all,

I was really just curious: how many of you are into electronics and making your own analogue synthesizers? I've been building my knowledge and synths for about... probably about 8 months now. Even still I have tons of fun building a simple 555 oscillator and a couple RC filters after it. I'm also making various guitar pedals, too.
Cheers! Yoa

Current electronic equipment: Korg Kaossilator, miniKP, microKORG, nanoKEY, nanoPAD, nanoKONTROL, monotron, Pandora PX5D, AX1000G, M-Audio Keystation 88es, Casio VL Tone, Soundcraft 102 mixer, laptop (which, among other things, has the KORG Legacy Collection and various NI stuffs), Acer Iconia a100 (has many music apps), Stylophone, Yamaha DX7

I've wanted to get into the analog thing but don't really know enough about analog electronics and can't find any decent tutorials or anything like that..

I have been working on building my own digital synthesizers though:

That's pretty awesome! I can never seem to get any DIY digital stuff to work.

Y'know how I learned? Google. I got everything from schematics to datasheets, and even a couple forums like AllAboutCircuits and Electronics Point to help me out. All it takes is time and a little trial and error. Or, a lot.

I've been building analogue synths for a while. I usually end up selling them on, but this one's a keeper : )

A similar set up with Doepfer would have cost over £4k - I built this for under a grand, but it did take 3 years!

I started off 5 years ago with limited knowledge of electronics, but picked up all the info I needed from electro-music.com (DIY Hardware and Software forums). They're a great bunch of guys, and always willing to help.

@X-Trade... I'm currently building something similar, although I initially planned on using the Bristol Softsynth on Linux... until I heard how bad the synths were!!! I'm now basing it on a Windows platform, not a million miles from the Open Labs Neko. Everything going well so far : )

That is awesome! I assume it's Eurorack? I'm trying to develop a modular system, but with limited knowledge it's not exactly easy. What modules do you have there, anyway?

Did you make the keyboard, too? I am trying to figure out CV stuff (audio modular is no problem) but always seem to have problems. I blog about my findings here: http://siryoa.blogspot.com/

I'll have to look into that forum. I think I've been a little too annoying on Electronics Point with all my newb questions haha!
