how to trigger RPPR patterns with Extreme?
Hi.. I had a Karma with a couple of expansion boards #3 and #4. I dont' know if I had them set up correctly, but they worked great with the .sng files
for triggering the RPPR patterns.
Now I installed the cards in my Korg Extreme, but when I load the songs its using PCG from something else, so instead of getting nice drum riffs, its playing the a mix of sax and brass and bass guitar or something random.
When I load C_BANK.sng it says load C_BANK.PCG too? If I load without the PCG I get the weird instrumentation. If I load the C_BANK.PCG too, I get silence from the RPPR keys and it buggers up my IZBIA sunrise and some other combis. They are easily brought back to normal by reloading "demo song and samples" or whatever it says there.
When it starts up it says SIMM CARD and then there are three blank ___
lines after the 3 simm card lines. Are the EXB 03 and EXB O4 expansion board the SIMM cards? there is one already in the Expansion board box that came with it. I guess that must be a memory card?
thanks for any clues about what I am doing.
REally thanks a lot if someone can help me assign the PCG where they won't disfigure my other combis and programs and where they can be accessible to the EXB boards and the RPPG SNGs.
thanks alot.

You can't install those cards in your Extreme. There are no slots for them. Did you force them into the SIMM card slots in the top left end of your Extreme??! If so turn off the power immediately and take them out before you damage something permanently. Those slots are for sample RAM expansions.
The Extreme has a few of Korgs expansion boards already in its ROM and kind of a "best of" selection of the others. There are no expansions available other than the MOSSboard and sample RAM (96MB total).
Mine is fully expanded but to be honest I have never tried any of those RPPR things from the groove-oriented expansions so I don't know if all the sounds are in there. Anyone?
If the sounds are in there somewhere, you should be able to just reassign them from the song - e.g. it may be pointing to bank C where your saxes are; just point it to a drumkit from the main seq window.

thanks very much but yes that's what I did. I was asking around about it before I did it and I got no replies. And they seemed to fit. On the kORG BOX when I bought the expansion boards it says for Triton , Triton Pro, Triton Pro-x, Karma, so I thought the Extreme included it. now I'm a bit ticked, but thanks for the info. It was such a close fit, I thought I could use them in there.
There should be a clearer warning or something.
I put the Karma on Ebay without these cards but if I can get the same results just playing the RPPR songs with the kits on the Extreme that's ok.
thanks a lot.

Thanks for warning me... I took them out and put them back in the Karma and had a bit of a scare when there was no sound.. NOTHING. ...not even the Combis and Progs would sound... I thought my Karma was cooked. but then I remembered I muted those channels on my DAW mixer and whew.. its all back to normal.. the RPPRs and the EXB chips worked fine!!! thanks a lot. wow the EXB chips and the Simms are almost
exactly the same size.. so I really thought I had a fit.

Glad no harm was done!
I've never used those RPPR boards or any preset patterns really, but you're saying you can load the patterns (from a SNG file I guess?), they're just playing with the wrong sounds?
If you can figure out which sounds are supposed to be playing (perhaps from the Karma), try to find those on the Extreme.
As you noted, you can load the PCGs from the boards, but it messes with your preset combis (because the programs get replaced). You can however load the programs in a different (empty) bank so they don't replace other internal sounds. To do this, navigate to the pcg file and click open, not load. Then you'll see "programs", open that. You'll now see a bank. Click load and it should ask you where to load it to. Select an empty bank.

Thanks SanderXpander... thanks a lot.. I'll follow that and see if I can get them organized to work right. I have had that Karma a long time and right at the beginning I made some cool stuff with it, and now that I'm trying to reduce my gear.. I find that I really like that feature of the RPPR function and those loops would have been more useful if I worked at it some more.
I think there are a couple songs and arrangements I won't be able to play anymore when I sell it. Oh well time marches on..
thanks again,
paul
