microkorg, sp 404, juno 106, and kp3

Post by miraclejuice »

can i hook all of the above together. I want to be able to use the kp3 live with all these other instruments. It sounds like the only possible way is to have more than one kp3.

You can always connect things together, it just depends on what you are going for. if you want all of them to be affected with the same effect, you can mix them all together and then have the kp3 after that. Otherwise, you'll need more than one KP3.

I want to use the SP404 for drums so I can have my samples easy and to get to but I also want to be able to play loops from the synths onto the KP3. So you are saying that I could connect all the instruments together and connect the KP3 last? Thanks

What I mean is I could start with the microkorg output to juno106 input juno106 output to sp 404 input and sp 404 output to KP3 input.

Does this make any sense?

Oh, I didn't know you had a modded 106. Yes, that should work, but bear in mind that the more you run a signal through stuff, the more it will be affected.

For example, I don't know which mod you have for the 106 (it doesn't come standard with an input), but normally it's either chorus or filter, or a thru connection. In the first two cases, your MK signal would be filtered or chorused, not just clean. Then your 404 can affect signals as well (if I remember correctly).

Depending on your application, you may want a simple 4:1 mixer (4 in, 1 out) so you can separate the signals. If you want them to run together, then you should be fine.

actually i don't have the 106 yet. I didn't know. They have an output only.

Setup idea: output of juno to input of kp3, midi from sp404 to kp3, and microkorg by itself. I really wish I could just buy what I need but I'm trying to have a solid plan on what to do with it.

106's have only output for audio, but you can pretty easily install a jack and a couple wires to any point in the synth. Yay for analogue!!

From your setup, I assume you're doing electronic music, probably anything from chillout to trance (correct me if I'm wrong). In that case, You'd probably want to output the MK into the KP3, and have the Juno and 404 separate.

The reason behind that is the Juno is 100% analogue, and digitally processing it will rid it of that full analogue warmth (and, connecting it would be a bitch). The MK, however, actually uses some of the same technology as the KP3 and is digital, so therefore will be a tonal and musical match. And the 404 can be separate because, unless you are doing more than drums and fill samples/loops, you probably won't need that with effects. If you do, just get a miniKP.

Matter of fact: if you are on a budget, the miniKP is very similar to the KP3, just less.

but technically I could put rca 1/4inch adaptor coming from the lineout and then plug it in to the kp3? Whether it doesn't do well for the sound or not is a different concern.

1/4" mono to stereo RCA, yes. Unless of course you're going mono all the way.
