how to solve right output issue on Trinity

Post by magpie »

hi gents,
I own a Trinity V3, and from some time the right output channel (also on the output headphone) doesn't work anymore.
I found out this link http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... php?t=3556 and it worked for some minutes after I started to play with it. Right now the issue came back again.
Do you have any new suggestion? I was thinking to unplug definitively the headphone cable coming from headphone connector to the back-connector board.

please help! I love trinity V3 sounds....

Have you tried contacting Korg Support?

Dear Michel,
it's a long story.
I bought my first trinity at the end of the last millenium, and unfortunately after a few month I had this problem.
I turn back the trinity to my shop and we started a long interaction about the tentative to solve my issue. when I reached the time where my trinity was more at tech support than at my house the interaction became a litigation.
At that point the shop decided to replace my trinity with a new one. Since then, I never had this sure and I considered that event as a single unlucky faulty Trinity unit.
3 month ago the fault came back also on this new one, and today with internet, i was really surprise about how many people met this issue as a known defect.
Looking at your excellent forum I find out some messages about the work-around solution, even if some essential trace are missed.
Even if today I own 3 korg synths, do you think that supports will help me or should be useful to ask to somebody in the forum that really can help me?
anyway, I', going to contact the support. I will let you back their feedback

If instead of tinkering you prefer a professional solution, you're better off going the official support way. They do support Trinity, still (my experience from a year ago).

Otherwise, prepare a crate of beer, a chainsaw and I can start explaining how to go the DIY way (which, by the way is described quite well in a number of posts).

Dear SynthJoe,
you are so funny, and for this reason I want to follow you up.
I already contacted my official support, and they forwarded me to local support (in italy). I wrote them, but still no answer probably due to the summer time.

Anyway I think we can make up for this issue if you can anticipate me something ....ready for DIM ;)
already tested the procedure as included in my first message...
If you think to suggest me anything else, you're welcome!!!
The beer is ready but I don't want to use the chainsaw .... it's not for trinity!!!!

u'll be welcome for giving me this opportunity!

OK magpie, I must apologise - it is not nice to make fun out of someone else's problem.

I have three Trinities since well over a decade and never had any similar problem with them. So how common this problem is would be difficult to say based on the reports you alluded to, because not many people report never having had this problem, do they?

Anyways, given my experience with my machines, there were not a great many times I had to take them apart (other than me voluntarily tinkering with them), so I would not be too afraid of soldering things instead of relying on 15 years old connectors (unless you're planning to take it apart frequently). So, did you try to disconnect the headphone jack cable to check what happens on the longer run? Since you did not report I couldn't tell, but fairly sure it does not cure the problem. Let me tell you why.

Without even a hint of trying to diminish Bonkwell's merits deserved on the other thread, this plug has no bearing on BOTH the R line output and the R side of the HP output. The only thing it affects is the phone out jack. Why does his fix seem to work, then? Because the volume slider's connector is right next to it, and when touching this HP connector on the KLM-1825 board (output jacks) you're bound to touch CN19A or move it's wires, too. Now, that is the volume slider's connector and if you look at it carefully, you'll notice that pin1 is 'RIN'. I guess there's no need to expain further - if it is always the right signal going out and both on the line and headphone outputs, then you'll have to do something about this pin (tighten, solder, whatever). If it does not help, then pin5 (ROUT) of the same connector might be the culprit, but it is unlikely, as in case of a break on that conductor you'd hear at least a light (or maybe louder) humming or noise on the output (whether line or phone), which you did not mention.

Hope this helps and you'll have your problem resolved for good. As to the chainsaw: cut the wire with that and then solder it to the PCB - ok granted, not the most appropriate tool, but it sure is a helluva fun practicing! :) (sorry)

P.S.: you'd be right asking why the R side for all, when it happens? Because wires are bent in a way that pin1 suffers the most stress, all vibration and shock will hit that pin first through the cables. I don't have scientific evidence, only guessing based on the 25 or so years of experience in troubleshooting electronics - changing the bend or tying the cable to some fixed part (e.g. the PCB) close to the connector could help on the long run.

Re: how to solve right output issue on Trinity

One of the main reasons, why i havent fixed my outputs is that I am using the ADAT out of the trinity to my PC soundcard. The first time i noticed that I had the output problem, was when I took my trinity to church, and since I didnt have the cables connected right to the volume pedal, my soundguy came and shook both my output cables pretty hard and he might have cracked the solder points that connect the output jacks to the motherboard. So, the main problem is there. If there is a crack there, the Trinity goes into safe moe some how. I read about it. How do I know this? one time, I hit the top of my trinity near the outputs, and turned off the trinity and turned back on, then both outputs where working again. I hit it again, and the problem came back. When I rebooted the Trinity it went into safe mode and didnt output on both again. So not scientific research but at least it shows that somehow, the solder joints of the output jacks are cracked or making a bad contact.

Since I use the ADAT out, the output connectors of the analog outs, don't interfere with the digital outs of the adat port. That is why I still get clean stereo out. But if I want to go via analog outs, then I have to hit the top of my trinity, reboot, then it works for as long as i dont move the 1/4 inch output cables connected to the analog outputs.

Hope that helps. If I ever decide to fix it, I will take digital pics to help everyone as I know its gonna happen to everyone sooner or later. Why? cause Korg messed up on the QC dept. there. The output connectors should have been reinforced or have been attached to the main frame of the Trinity with screws or something so that the pressure exerted when one puts in the instrument cables, gets transferred to the body of the Trinity instead of the motherboard and solder joints of the motherboard.

Cheers

When the line output jack is damaged, you should still have sound in the headphones, both L and R side.

very good, finally i can appreciate the added value of a member ;)
let me the time to check your observation in the next days and i'll come back to you.

right now I can assure that when the issue had arisen, it was both on right output ch. and on the headphone.
I played last time on monday and everything worked fine (after that I plugged off and on) only after that I powered on the trinity and pushed (in sense of pull and push more times) the jack cable in the trinity. From there it worked correctly, but i have to try again....it doesn't seem a stable situation.

be back soon

ciao guys.

im a service engineer and fix lots of different manufacturers synths and samplers

the out put problem is not just specific to korg it also happens on ensoniqs
rolands and yamaha

on the korgs trinity

the main audio cable from the main board and the head phone cable

the first problem is moisture it carodes the terminals to get a perfect machine we need to first use de-oxit on the push female connector and the male connector on the audio board

and also on the main board

once you have put de-oxit on the 2 connectors and the 2 pcb connectors

push them on and take them off about ten times after the 5th time re-spray de-oxit on the terminals again this will break up the copper oxide the black colour when tarnished

once you have done it then clean with a qtip and some iso alchahol

remove all residue

now do the same for the head phone socket

now if the headphone socket still playing up it could be the actual phono socket as i have had to change 3 for new ones on trinity's that have come in for service

trinity no longer sell the part but they can get a newer equivelent from
the manufacturer who makes them jalco as they still fit jalco phono sockets to there boards and jalco are always making new parts but same equivelent types just different parts numbers

I'm back, this is my observation.
As anticipated in the previous post, it's a few days that the trinity sounds good both from L+R and from HeadPhone.
Still when i push the right male Jack, the sound on the right side disappears...but fortunately if I try to arrange until I feel correctly the sound it sounds good for hour...and this never happens before.
Moreover today I sprayed a de-oxit aerosol both on male and female connector. Still when I joke with the male in the female connector the sound disappear until I found out the right connector. From then, it sounds for hours instead of some minutes.

Another interesting thing is that in past the issue was both on output L+R and on HeadPhone. Now if I joke with the jack (male->female) while I listening on HP, the sound is pretty good and no interruption occurred.

So what's the news? It seems that when i found the correct position I can finally play back in stereo mode. I don't know how long it stays in this situation....I will let you now!!!

Last question to JHULK: could you confirm that i can spray de-oxit also on the output and HP socket applied on the connector PCB?

Did we found the right way.....

yes you can spray the deoxit on the connector on the pcb just clean any residue up afterwards with iso alchahol

you can also spay inside the headphones socket as that can become tarnished with age also making bad contact it happens to the m1 and t series and ow1

also after many switch the spring can become week not making contact correctly

i did a trinity recently i had to put a new phono connector only £3 from korg

i have the part number for the exact equivelent as they no longer sell the original but they are still make equivelent versions that are the latest lead free components
