iPad sequencer App for Kronos?

Post by alex_none »

Hi everybody, I'm desperately searching for a good iPad MIDI sequencer App to use with my Kronos. I would like to find something far better in functionalities than Kronos internal sequencer.

Can anyone suggest me something? I was excited reading about the new iPad Auria 48-Track recording app but after reading a little bit about it I'm pretty sure it lacks the MIDI sequencer and MIDI editor.

I would like very much to be able to leave my MacBook/Cubase stuff at home when I go around and to bring with my just my K61 and iPad. It Would be a very portable / thrilling combination :-)

Thank you to everybody

Cheers,

Alex

midi studio is not a sequencer, it's a midi controller app.

I think it depends on your working method, you have to choose the sequencer based on your workflow.

If you are a pattern based type of guy then look at demo's from

if you are more a songbased type of guy then look at Garageband.

Thank you very much!

Gonna check them and decide.

By the way Qui... wonderful work with your tutorials and sound sets! To tell the truth I bought a Kronos for what it can do far more than what I could do with it... And your videos every time confirm my choice :-)
You're really a pro in sound design!

Cheers

GarageBand won't play MIDI back to Kronos - or any other device. Nice app, lots of uses, but it has the limitation that it only plays internal GB instruments.

It looks like this app will do want you want.

I'm curious if anyone on these boards have used it.

I'm also curious, alex_none, what you would hope to do on the iPad that you couldn't do with the Kronos's onboard sequencer?

I just got it yesterday and managed to connect my kronos to my ipad today.

Initial test worked but I have to select an internal instrument and turn down the volume as I havent found any other way to send midi only without an softsynth loaded (yet?).

Anything you want me to try?

It was sooo cool to use the kronos as an usb-soundcard with my ipad!

Auria is audio only but I found it nice to do quick mixes on the road and is also perfect when rehearsing eith the band.

I just need to find that 24ch usb i/o then this baby really rocks!

well i've tried genome tonight, the first tests didn't go well, lots of app crashes and midi delays and hickups.

I have to do some more tests to see if i can get it stable with the kronos.

I was curious if it actually played MIDI back out to the Kronos (or other device). Everything I read bout the device was unclear. I thought from user comments that your experience was the case, that it would send MIDI out but that it played the internal sound with it. I'll be interested if you find a way to play a track on the Kronos only.

In general, did you feel it was a worthwhile purchase?

It might be the best option regarding apps for sequencing , yes.

Yep, I´m curious too.

Thats the key point.
what do you want to do, exactly?

My guess would be he's trying to use it as a step sequencer?

Thank you everybody for your kind answers.

I need a sequencer just for recording midi events on different tracks and play them back to the Kronos (and maybe different other several instruments when I'm in my home studio). I like recording my songs the old way, I mean recording drum track, bass, piano, strings and other instruments one by one, without using predefined loops and so on. Audio recording would be a plus but it's not so important. So you would say that it's a pretty basic need and indeed it is..

That being said my first problem with the internal kronos sequencer is the touch screen: I find pretty difficult to work editing tracks on a so small device. After that I would like to have a piano roll editing function, advanced functions for quantization, possibility to cut / slice / move tracks and many other basic functions that I don't find in the Kronos sequencer or they are pretty difficult for me to perform there.

Cubase was my choice up to now but I was wondering if there could be some iPad app that can provide me the same midi sequencing functions. It would be really productive for me to work on the ipad multi-touch screen, zooming and editing tracks in a far more convenient way that from the Kronos screen.

I start looking at all the app mentioned here till now and the only possible choice for me seems to be Music Studio (http://www.xewton.com/musicstudio/overview/). I am trying to figure out how to play back tracks without having the iPad instruments to play as well.

It's really strange in my opinion that nobody till now developed a VERY GOOD iPad sequencer app with the only purpose of giving a full featured multi track midi sequencer, without all those silly internal ipad instruments.
A Cubase-like iPad app (even without audio functions) would be perfect for me, but I think Steinberg released just Cubase iC, a pretty basic iPad remote controller for Cubase, not so useful in my opinion...

I keep on my investingations and trials :-)

Thank you everybody

I cant test this yet but according to the manual:

1.5.2 MIDI out for muted tracks
By default, MIDI events are not output for muted tracks. Enable this checkbox to send all track’s events via MIDI during playback. This way you can minimize the CPU load on your device by muting all tracks, using Music Studio like a MIDI sequencer.

As for worthwhile - Still trying it, but as for now the best alternative I've found so far....

Thanks, roblof. Two last questions:

1. Does it support custom meters, like say 5/4 or 7/8?
2. Does it support meter changes within a sequence?

Thanks!
