USB-MIDI Interface problems

Post by Yoa »

Hey guys,

So since I know you're a helpful bunch and I generally trust you, I'm going to ask for your help. In return, whoever helps will get my collection of DX7 and MK patches. Totally cool reward lol

Ok, so here's my issue: I recently acquired an M-Audio MIDISPORT Uno USB-MIDI interface. I installed the latest drivers and have all the connections right, and coolly enough I can control a modern softsynth like Massive with my Yamaha DX7 MkI. It's a neat experience.

However, I do have one small issue: it seems as if I can only send note and CC messages (maybe velocity, haven't checked). I cannot get my DX7 or MicroKORG librarians to see the respective devices. In the MK librarian available on the KORG site, it knows the MK is there but can't read the patches.

And with my DX7, I'm using SynLib DX-TX, and it takes about a second to come back with the message "Timed out." When I load a bank and tell it to send over MIDI, it does nothing (no surprise there).

Note that I do have the computer MIDI config set up to read to and from the Uno, and according to MIDI-OX it does send all messages correctly. I also have write protection on both instruments turned off. I've tried the MK with its global position both Post and Pre, still nothing.

TL;DR - M-Audio Uno doesn't send/recieve messages that would change MicroKORG or DX7 patches (programs).

Please help! I have a hell of a DX7 library, and a few custom MK patches!!! They are calling your name!! (crappy enticement, I know)
Cheers! Yoa

So, you have proper two-way MIDI communications set up correctly, you say? Can you play the DX7 (for example) from your computer keyboard through MIDI-OX? Click on the KEY box at the bottom right of the MIDI-OX window to turn it inverse and use the X, C, V, etc, keys of your computer to play the HW synth.

If that works, you should check which MIDI device is used by your librarian to communicate with the synth(s) - usually in setup, or uses the default MIDI device of the OS, in which case you'll have to change that in the OS Audio/MIDI settgins.

Good luck!

Yup, MIDI-OX sees it perfectly, and I used your trick and that was simply bizarre, but works. I can also use other devices, like my Nano stuff, to play the DX7 and MK. MIDI-OX even told me that the DX7's mod wheel works, though on the actual synth it doesn't. That's for another topic, though.

Both librarians are using the Uno only, the computer's MIDI stuff is disabled. It's like everything can see and use the Uno, but the librarians don't want to. Is it possible that messages like those are too complex for the Uno to translate?

I don't think so.

Keep on trying, all sorts of memory protection (exclusive, etc.) should be switched off. I know you've already checked that, but doing twice will not hurt. Sorry, I don't think I can be much more of a help remotely under these conditions. Everything just seems to work fine from a hardware perspective, so you'll have to check software settings, or something along those lines.

Yeah, I figured remote help wouldn't really work out.

Happen to want the various patches anyway? Just PM your email and I'll send them.
