About using Backing Tracks & the Sequencer

Post by 75631 »

Hi there,

I'm fairly new to the world of Workstations. For about a week now I'm a proud owner of the Kronos and am trying to create the following situation:

My band uses backing tracks on stage, e.g. additional Keys, second Guitars, Percussion, etc. that already have been recorded and mixed in a DAW.
The drummer is playing to a click track, so there is quite some routing and I love that the Kronos gives me the possibility to send the sounds of my synths, the backing tracks and the click track plus some of the backing tracks to separate outputs!

I do have some problems and questions though:

1)
I can't get the K to load up those songs automatically when powering it up. I've selected the .KSC file but I still have to load the songfile manually.
I think I've seen songfiles loading from inside the locked folders but I can't select my own.

2)
In one of the songs I am using an arpeggiated sound of the PolySix and somehow I can't manage to sync it exactly to the songtempo. I've set the programm and the sequencer to the same tempo, but sometimes it's like constantly a sixteenth note late.

3)
Is there a way to send the backing track not only to it's dedicated output, but also via a bus to the output of the click track? Right now I'm solving this by simply duplicating the backing track, but I figure I'll save some disk space if I could just use a send bus.

4) Does it have to be 48KHz or is 44.1 KHz also fine?

Thanks for your comments! Once I'll manage to do this stuff, I can finally dive into programming sounds!

AFAIK, you can also autoload KSC files (files having multisamples) :(

Are you using the arpeggiator of the Polisix? If so, make sure you've set the Tempo Sync switch and maybe the Key Sync switch off. Also, make sure to properly quantize the input notes you're sending to the arpeggiator.

You can use either option...

75631,

You should watch the tutorial in this link:

Backing Tracks

The way he does it (and how I do it) is not to load samples into RAM (.KSC) but to have the audio files stream from the SSD. This is much more efficient and the load time of songs is very quick. You can add MIDI tracks to the song and have them trigger Kronos synths, so long as the song tempo is in sync with the audio file tempo.

Busch.

Hey Guys,

sorry for the delay and a big thank you for your helpful posts to!

The problem with the arpeggiator of the PolySix seems to have been KeySync - it was set to off and I think now it works... the next rehearsals will tell.

The Tutorial Vid is a blast. Unfortunately it appeared one day after I found out myself the same way :/

Anyway, I sure it'll help lot's of users!

hehe, sorry for that.

But on the other hand, it's always better to find it out yourself. That way you learn so much more about how the Kronos menu structures works and the way the kronos reacts on certain parameters.

You can use either option...

How do you change the sample rate on kronos?

that doesn't change the sample rate though.... i thought the same rate was by the master tune parameter and was set at a fixed rate of 440.00 Hz

For using 48 kHz sample rate, you can use S/PDIF or WAV files with this characteristics...

The integrated sampler also uses this sample rate.

I don't get it and I still don't understand how this changes the sample rate.

You don't change the internal sample rate on Kronos. You can use 48 kHz (and even 24 bit depth) on the features I mentioned. AFAIK the signal will be converted internally to 44.1 kHz when the signal is written to RAM.

Well, I wish. Today it came back on me. Don't know how, don't know why but it sometimes just is a sixteenth or whatever note behind everything else.

For better understanding: I have a backing track and I'm playing an 8th note arpeggiated bassline on top of it. Sometimes it's perfectly in the pocket, sometimes it drives me nuts.
