hi guys

what do they mean by "ribbon" on the m50?

Hello mansize,
The m50 doesn't have a ribbon controller, but it's sibling instrument, the M3 does.

Also it listens to the Ribbon controller in case you have a slave with a ribbon attached to it (or midi sequence with the ribbon controller programmed).

I think Ribbon Controller is CC16
