New Kronos Today
I received my K61 today, and I am both blown away by the sounds, and a bit daunted by the steep learning curve ahead of me! A far cry from my first Korg, a DW6000!
Congratulations on your purchase! May it bring you many happy years of sonic indulgence!
I received mine a week ago, and you're right - it is incredibly overwhelming!
Anyway, keen to gear your thoughts as you get better acquainted.

Re: New Kronos Today
Congratulations, after a few weeks I got no much further than programming some combis for the band and listening to the 1000+ sounds.mikesny wrote:I received my K61 today, and I am both blown away by the sounds, and a bit daunted by the steep learning curve ahead of me! Yeah, definitely a far cry from my first Korg (and first ever synthesizer): Poly-800! I'm finding the sequencer easier to work with and the parameters and LFO don't step as much!!mikesny wrote:I received my K61 today, and I am both blown away by the sounds, and a bit daunted by the steep learning curve ahead of me! I tend to think of it not as overwhelming or a steep learning curve but as an immense spectrum of possibilities to explore for years! If you're into the programming bit you can get straight-up modular with the board (seriously, try routing program ins and outs via IFX in Combi mode and you'll forget all about it being a workstation with KARMA and everything else- it'll just become an uber-modular).
Plus, there's a special kind of joy with waking up each day and realizing that you don't have to have a favorite synth engine- it can change every time you power on the keyboard!
Congratulations and enjoy!!

Congrats on the k61 purchase. I've had mine a couple weeks and am no further than some basic simple combi changes. i find most of the manual seems so far over my head. But as with most things, it's just gonna take some time and determination. Have fun with your new toy, I know I will be for a long time to come.
Thank goodness I'm retired! Got to bed at 2 AM and back at it at 8 AM! I've started to aquaint myself with the programs, and trying to compare controllers with my Karma (the only other board I'm keeping....for now!)
Got to switch to 'phones when my wife gets home from work!
Thanks for all your good wishes. I hope you're all having as much fun as I am!

Man I LOVE posts like yours!! I really love the enthusiasm especially in light of some of the whinging that goes on in internet fora.mikesny wrote:Thank goodness I'm retired! I have had my Kronos since June and there hasn't been a day that has passed in which the capabilities of this instrument haven't amazed me - and I am a professional sleight of hand artist and NOT so easily "amazed" by much.

The learning curve on some of the engines is quite daunting, especially MOD-7 and AL-1. But the challenges are a huge part of the fun. I am getting more comfortable with MOD-7 because - and Dan from Korg has stated this elsewhere - it is very similar to Kurzweil in certain respects. AL-1 however is rather elusive to me right now. I am hearing what other musicians are doing with that engine and I do get frustrated that I cannot coax AL-1 to do that - yet. But I realize that indeed all good things take time. The cool thing about Kronos is that if I get too frustrated with AL-1, I can always muck about with an easier engine like PolySix and create some weirdness

Anyhow, welcome to the madness!!!!
Ahimsa,
Vlad
PS: You should let your wife hear what you are doing

Current gear: Kronos, Jupiter 80, Kurzweil PC3,Roland Fantom X8, Roland XV-88 (yep, its old, but the ACTION is heaven and those XV-3080 sounds are still wonderful for me), Radias-R, Motif ES (yeah it's older but I love the guitars
)

Well, I just got my Kronos 61 today and have been absolutely awestruck by the capabilities. Just became a member of KF as well to start posting here.
Digging into the sounds I was able to compose my first sequence using a bit of help from the ONLINE manual. Not too hard to record, but figuring out how to save the song was a bit of a challenge. I had read some reviews on some other sites about the sequencer being non-intuitive and it really caused me some concern, but I am very happy with being able to actually USE an onboard sequencer for once. Bravo Korg!!
I came from a Triton ProX that I retired in 2004 and had a Korg Z1 as well for a brief time. The Kronos is on a whole other level and I am so glad I waited before buying a new synth. My timing could not have been better to get back into ambient electronic music again.
