CX-3: Do these parameters make sense?

Post by GiantSonicRobot »

I'm a bit confused by how the settings for mic distance in the CX-3's Leslie sim behave.
What I notice is this: lowering the value increases the volume of the respective driver (horn or rotor). This is the expected behaviour, since according to the Parameter Guide, lower values bring the mics closer to the speaker.
On the other hand, one would expect that moving the mics closer to the speakers should also increase the "beating" of the sound (the resulting amount of amplitude modulation). However, the opposite is the case. Small values for mic distance give a loud signal with very little amplitude modulation, large distance gives a quiet signal with a lot of amplitude modulation.

This does not seem to make sense.

Some Korg programmer reading this just went "oops", if you ask me.

This makes sense to me.

Most microphones are less directional at close range. Thus being closer to the sound source, even if it is largely directional, will provide a more even response across the full range of motion.

To be honest, I've never physically mic'ed a Leslie in a recording situation, but I think what you describe is the opposite of what every other modeling engine does.
