USB VS Midi

Post by hammondcuni »

Will there be a difference in speed and or quality of sound when using a controller with USB or Midi connections? Would USB be better to have as a connection? I'm considering using Triton Classic as a controller instead of buying a straight controller.

I'm using my triton classic as a controller as well as a synth with my computer and M-Audio Fast Track Pro and I have no complaints of the midi :)

None. The whole point of MIDI is that you are 'controlling' something else to make the sound. USB connected controller keyboard is still MIDI. It is just virtual MIDI port over a physical USB connection.

as you would hopefully, MIDI has no effect on actual sound quality because it is the recieving device (in this case the computer) that makes the sounds.

If you were using a workstation's own sounds for your music, the USB is generally better because it has a faster bandwidth/data rate so can handle entire arrangements sent over MIDI more precisely in time than a traditional MIDI 5-pin DIN socket connection. But then that would have to be a modern workstation that has USB built in - a USB/MIDI interface/adaptor cable would still have to go through the 5-pin DIN into the triton classic.

I have a couple controllers and am now using my Triton as my controller. I wish I'd have done it sooner... I've noticed no lag or any issues that would keep me from using it down the road. I picked up a Korg nanoKontrol and put that on top and it does everything I need it to.

Sounds good. Triton classic will be my controller. Much better key action for what I play.

Thanks

I have been looking for a good keyboard controller for a couple years now and have purchased a few and have been unhappy. I bought the nanoKontrol on a whim, slapped it on top and have been VERY happy with it. The keys on the Triton are my favorite and I prefer a joystick to mod wheels so it was a natural fit for me. And since you already own it, you save money AND space by not buying a second keyboard.
